The Senate refused Wednesday to limit debate on the first amendment to the fiscal 2008 defense authorization bill, digging in along partisan lines over whether to tell President Bush how to wage the war in Iraq.
By 56-41, senators refused to invoke cloture on an amendment by Jim Webb, D-Va., that sought to require specific minimum intervals between deployments of U.S. troops. The final tally was four short of the 60 votes needed, and Webb withdrew his amendment after the cloture test failed.
Seven Republicans voted to limit debate Norm Coleman, Minn., Susan Collins, Maine; Chuck Hagel, Neb.; Gordon H. Smith, Ore.; Olympia J. Snowe, Maine; John E. Sununu, N.H., and John W. Warner, Va. So did all 48 Democrats present and one independent, Bernard Sanders of Vermont. Independent Joseph I. Lieberman of Connecticut voted no.

Please `spain what is a “standoff”?
What standoff. They voted, they lost, MoveOn.
Maybe not a “paper” tiger, but a “papier mache” one for now......
Congress Critter ping!

Norm Coleman is really disappointing.
Democrats are the “paper tigers”. I think they actually believe that they know better than our military on such items as how to run a war. If they are not careful, we will see a massive exit of our military officers. As under Clinton, we lost over 2000 military officers because they didn’t trust him.
7 RINO’s voted for closure:
Norm Coleman-Susan Collins-Chuck Hagel-Gordon Smith-Olympia Snowe-John E. Sununu-John W. Warner.
48 Defeatocrats + Commie Sanders, voted for closure.
Statesman Joseph Lieberman + 40 Repub voted no on closure.
56 Yes to 41 no.
Coleman and Smith are playing to local politics, Lieberman is not playing and is a true statesman.
Every one of these turncoats need to get phone calls from the Republican base. We did it for the immigration bill, we can do it for the WOT. Polls be darned. The polls are a combination of those opposed plus those who are not happy because we are not doing enough to win. We need to let the GOP hear that we do not oppose winning this war.

This is not the time to be playing local politics. Bringing home the pork is, IMO, playing local politics. Sabotaging the war effort is national. They should have some guts and do the right thing.
