Timothy Armstead was at the Washington Mutual Bank on Candler Road on Tuesday afternoon to figure out how someone could have stolen $100 from his account, when a man wielding a fire extinguisher barged in and demanded that tellers hand him $2,000.
That set Armstead off.
Grousing there was just too much stealing going on, the retired Marine put down his young daughter and tackled the robber, knocking him to the ground.
"I just brought him down to the ground and told him not to move," he told WSB-TV.
DeKalb County police said the robber told bank employees the fire extinguisher was a bomb and they had five minutes to comply with his demands: He wanted $2,000 in $50 bills.
As employees scurried to the bank vault to comply, the unidentified man began loudly counting down the minutes, attracting the attention of Armstead, said police spokesman Michael Payne.
But when the robber tried walking out with the loot, Armstead who now works as a custodian in a nearby store knocked him to the ground and held on.
The man yielded without a fight, he said. And while they waited for police to arrive, Armstead said he lectured the robber on his poor decision.
"I just told him it was a very stupid decision and now you get to spend 20 years of your life just for taking some money," Armstead told the television station.
Armstead could not be reached for comment Tuesday night.
In the end, the bank got its money back. It was not known, however, whether Armstead recovered his.
I post this an up pops AlGore saying something about stupidity. Seems like he was talking to BG in the story.
They should hire him a “Director of Corporate Security”
BUMP!!!!
And they said “retired” instead of “ex-.” Holy style-books, Batman, have they finally learned?
USMC: No greater friend, no worse enemy (not even at the bank!).
“”I just told him it was a very stupid decision and now you get to spend 20 years of your life just for taking some money,””
That’s just not a consideration for the typical crack head.
“Alright, everybody. Listen up! This is a stick-up. I’ve got a bomb, and I know how to use it!”
“That’s not a bomb.”
“Yes, it is. It’s red and bullet-shaped. It’s a bomb!”
“Nah, that’s fire extinguisher!”
“Get back, get back, or I’ll, uh, I’ll pull this rubber rip cord and detonate!”
“That’s not a rip cord. It’s a hose!”
“Look, just give me two thousand dollars, okay?”
“Or what?”
“Or, or I’ll... here. Hold this a minute. Okay, folks. This is a stickup. I’ve got a remote detonater here, and I’ll blow this place to pieces if you don’t give me the money!”
“That’s not a detonator. That’s a remote door key for a car.”
“No, it’s a detonator. Watch this.”

“Your trunk just opened.”
“Next time, I’m coming as a tree.”
Wooo hooo! Another retired Marine takes another bad guy down! Great job!
Standard sentence for a “simulated weapon” bank robbery is 2 to 3 years, in CA.

I call BS! This hasn't even happened yet! ;)
Drat the luck, they put the "0" right beside the "9" on my keyboard. Sure am glad I do not have to rely on my touch typing skills to bring home the bacon.
Message to all Potential PERPS: You never know bad guys when there’s a Retired Servicemember or a Vet that’s going to take your Dumb Butt Down - HARD.
Reminds me of the dope who tried several years ago to rob a bank, without realizing it was near the local FBI. It was 5 p.m. on a payday Friday. He found himself looking down the barrels of twenty or so service automatics.
“Retired” Marine alert. Someone should make a ping list for this.
Is this number 3 or 4 ...in the last week?!?!?
It is a shame the Marine did not slam a fist hard into the guys face. Sort of teach him a little lesson.
