Glue? How odd.

I should have tied it to the inevitable Boston political crookery and the entirely predictable inompetence of the politicos' sons'-in-law.

Silly me.

Bechtel wrote specifications for the epoxy and reviewed the choice but never thought about its long-term strength, according to investigators.

Norm,....isn't Bechtel HDQ in San Francisco?

Too much Kennedy Scotch mixed with the epoxy?

Or cheaper epoxy means more Scotch for ol Ted

Another Kennedy project results in a woman’s death. Heard this one before.

“The ceiling collapsed in one of Boston’s Big Dig tunnels a year ago, killing one woman, because builders used the wrong epoxy to hold the anchor bolts in place, the National Transportation Safety Board said Tuesday.”

Oh dear God, what an unbelievably careless mistake!

The issue really is bad joint design in an area where even a single failure is unacceptable. They should have used J- hooks, or some other type of positive mechanical connection to the steel structure. Suspending the weight of a tractor trailer using threaded rods epoxied into blind holes? Sombody watched too many Krazy Glue commercials.

There are so many factors that go into designing, producing, and qualifying high reliability adhesive bonds, that it just seems foolish to have allowed their use here.

I'm no engineer but the idea of depending on any type of glue to hold thousands of pounds of concrete on the ceiling of a tunnel sounds like criminal incompetence to me.

That would explain Teddy Kennedy, another unglued project.

Call me old-fashioned, but relying on glue to hold 26 tons of steel and concrete to the ceiling just seems like a bad idea.

Uhhh..... it was reported that the problem was with the use of epoxy since the day the accident happened. Not sure why this is being reported as something new.

Can anyone say “root cause analysis”? A design that is prone to fail due to a single source of error like this is a rather poor one, in my opinion. Absolutely zero redundancy in the solution they chose. The whole thing was dependent on each and every bolt being epoxied into the ceiling holding fast. I’d hang my head in shame if I was the engineer that signed off on this design.

“We’re talking about the wrong glue here, in effect,” said Kitty Higgins, one of the five members of the board, which said that the epoxy selected dried quickly but lost strength weeks later.

Was the glue made in China? THAT would not surprise me at all.

Then they better re-inspect the tensile strength on the scotch tape holding the rest of the thing togeather.
