U.S. Official: Iraq Progress Good on 8 of 18 Benchmarks

WASHINGTON — A U.S. official said Thursday the Iraq government has been given a satisfactory rating on eight of 18 political and security benchmarks measured in an interim White House report to Congress, a mixed rating on two and an unsatisfactory rating on eight benchmarks

officials emphasize this is an interim report to measure progress in Iraq, and they continue to place emphasis on a report due in September, which will include comments and recommendations of Gen. David Petraeus, head of Multinational Forces in Iraq, and U.S. Ambassador to Iraq Ryan Crocker.

President Bush is expected to make comments after the White House Iraq Report to Capitol Hill is released in full Thursday morning.

Watch FOX News Channel or FOXNews.com for a news conference with President Bush at 10:30 a.m. ET.

Officials say the report shows that more satisfactory evaluations were given on the security benchmarks as opposed to the political ones, which was to be expected because the strategy was designed to emphasize security first.

If this was a public school report card the grade would be a B.

This is surprising. For 2 days all I’ve heard is that all benchmarks were missed.

But but but all the "news" stations have been reporting the Iraq government has not met a single benchmark, so reality can't be true.

BTW these benchmarks aren't top secret, so the ones that are met are in plain sight. Yet the media chose to report that this report would say none are met.

Yeah of course, because the LSM reported it and so it must be true

“This is surprising. For 2 days all I’ve heard is that all benchmarks were missed.”

It is. I was looking for the article I saw a few days ago I think from AP that said NONE of the benchmarks had been achieved.

The benchmarks are so broad and subjective that the Dems will never be satisfied and will howl all summer.

Didn't that give you a clue when you read that the article you read was from AP?

“the Iraq government has been given a satisfactory rating on eight of 18 political and security benchmarks”

less than 50% “satisfactory”

In the real world this level of performance is considered unacceptable.

I'm working on the political side - working directly with a part of the Iraqi government.

I can understand why it didn't score as high as the security side, but it is moving in the right direction. There have been a few much-needed shake-ups lately and rumors abound that bigger ones are on the way.

This is an interim report. They still have two months to get those numbers up. We’ll see.

Found it...

“More crAP

On Tues the Associated Press gleefully reported:

WASHINGTON — A progress report on Iraq will conclude that the U.S.-backed government in Baghdad has not met any of its targets for political, economic and other reform, speeding up the Bush administration’s reckoning on what to do next, a U.S. official said Monday.

One likely result of the report will be a vastly accelerated debate among President Bush’s top aides on withdrawing troops and scaling back the U.S. presence in Iraq.

Well their source must once again have been Jamil Hussein as Fox sets the record straight:

Is there any question why the majority of Americans don’t trust the Press and why so many newspapers across the country are struggling to survive?”

You do realize that these benchmarks are measuring progress in the implementation of a new plan in which the military component just reached it's full troop levels.

I hope you also realize that you don't set simple and easily attained benchmarks if you want to see real progress.

It is early in the implementation of this plan. It's a good time to take a look at how things are starting out and look at what efforts are showing promise and what need more work or a different approach.

However, demanding that all benchmarks should be right on track right when things are getting started is surrender monkey B.S.

Just getting started? This entire initiative is supposed to be completed in less than 2 months.

And, demanding "satisfactory" progress is the minimum acceptable performance standard, otherwise the "benchmarks" are irrelevant ant the project is unmanageable.
