ACLU sues town to permit May Day celebration:

Posted on 07/12/2007 2:17:38 PM PDT by street_lawyer

Bridgeton sent the Farmworkers Support Committee a bill for $1,500 for city services including police, and has no ordinances imposing fees for marches or parades. "The fee amounts to a user's tax on free speech and that is unconstitutional," says ACLU attorney Frank Corrado. "Imposition of these fees will mean that only the wealthy will be afforded the right to speak out on issues." 7-12-07

May Day also refers to various socialist and labor movement celebrations conducted on May 1, unrelated to any pagan or traditional celebrations, to commemorate the Haymarket martyrs of 1886 and the international socialist social movement generally. May Day in this regard is called International Workers' Day or Labour Day, and is a commemoration of the execution of the Haymarket martyrs who were arrested after the Haymarket Riot of 1886 in Chicago, Illinois, which occurred on May 4 but was the culmination of labor unrest that had begun on May 1. Consequently this May Day became established as an anarchist and socialist holiday, and in this form, May Day has become an international celebration of the social and economic achievements of the working class and labor movement. It is somewhat ironic that the country in which this form of May Day originated is also the country in which it is least recognized; in the United States, May Day is officially observed as Loyalty Day.[2]

When are they going to stop?

We need another march on the ACLU or CAIR in NYC. I have a nice little shirt that will make them call me a racist.

Ah, yes, May Day. The Communist’s ‘Holy’ day, of course!

When are they going to stop?

When we track them down and start making them disappear in Soprano types of ways!

Ex post facto billing by a government for services rendered is going to cost this town a serious penny.

This has to do with incompetence of the town council present and past, and town managers and lawyers, present and past.

I aggree with the ACLU, but only if they didn't ask for police protection.

Next time let the little commies provide their own security. See how well that might work.

The ACLU wants to force towns to fund socialist celebrations with taxpayer money. Outrageous!

That can be stopped. Just bring crosses and bibles to these celebrations.

The city is well within its authority to demand remittance for reasonable public health and safety costs associated with mass gatherings, for whatever reasons.

Recently, though, there has been a limited effort to fight such fees in court, only on grounds of poverty, though. There is a lot of back and forth on the issue, however.

For example, cities may refuse to close streets, insisting that marches remain on the sidewalks. If a rally is to be held at the beginning or end of the march, usually a permit must be obtained to use a city park. And additional requirements can be made, such as providing “porta potties” in adequate numbers for the participants.

We have to wonder what is going on in the minds of those who participate in "May Day: celebrations. They are truly people who do not have a clue about what is going on and will walk into the fire of hell to toast a marshmallow.
