Oddly enough, I didn't really learn English grammar to a satisfactory level until I took Latin in high school.

We started learning phonics in first grade, with the Dick and Jane Books .

I learned to read quickly..I remember reading Tom Sawyer when I was in the second grade. My father took me to the library every weekend, and I came home with the three book limit until I was in 5th grade, when I could check out as many books as I could carry. That was the highlight of my weekend. Even now, I'm always in the middle of a book, or I'm starting a new one.

Yeah, I remember. Biggest waste of time in the history of man. My teacher in 4th grade made us diagram sentences all the time. Kept telling us we would be doing it in junior high and high school so we should be ready. Do you know I never diagrammed a sentence after I left that old bat's class?

I was in a Catholic grade school in the mid 80s and I remember having to diagram sentences. The nun who taught us also insisted we use a ruler and do it precisely.

My girlfriend is going to be starting teaching in the 4th grade in a month at a local Catholic school. They still have diagramming sentences on their curriculum.
