ANGOLA, Ind. -- A waitress got more than a $5 tip for her friendly service. She also got a $10,000 gift.
Jessica Osborne was so overcome she cried so hard she could barely breathe. When she told a co-worker what had happened she called her a liar.
''I got that a lot,'' Osborne said.
The money came from a mother and her two sons who want to remain anonymous. The three were regular customers at the Pizza Hut in Angola and she remembered their order: two Mountain Dews, a cup of hot water for a bag of tea the woman would bring in, and a large Meat Lover's Stuffed Crust pizza.
Each time they would ask for Osborne to be their server and chat with her.
''They make your day better when they come in,'' she said.
The 20-year-old waitress told the family recently how she had started college twice before, but had to withdraw because she didn't have enough money. They came Sunday night and handed Osborne a check, folded in half, with money from an education fund they had set up after a death in the family.
''I said I didn't want to look at it because I thought I was going to cry,'' Osborne said.
I’ve always wondered about that when I watch “Extreme Makeover: Home Edition”. Who pays the taxes on this new, million dollar home? Still, a good deed is a good deed and someday, I’d like to be able to do something like this.
I'm sure somewhere there is a Muslin who is deeply offended by all this, and considers this act of generosity an insult to Islam.
And if there isn't there ought to be.
I am assuming you are referring to my screen name?
If you are, you need to go back to your Bible and read up on Judge not lest ye be judged yourself. Check it out.
IIRC, that limit's been raised. I believe that it was $11,000 several years ago and may be even higher now.
I imagine that’s why the tip was for precisely $10,000.
wouldn't it be nice to be able to pass out $10,000 checks to people we meet that need and deserve a little help.....
there is something about giving money away that is spiritually and psychologically rewarding....
No, my defensive and overbearing friend, I was not referring to your screen name. Perhaps if you would go back and look at your previous post and then consider it in light of the context of this thread, you will begin to understand my righteously-judged comment.
Oh, the homeowners definitely get hit with huge tax bills after their assessments go up.
But the producers do a few things to help offset it. They use a tax provision that allows them to lease the how for a couple weeks, while renovating, and pay the owners (and the owners aren’t taxed on that).
They also encourage owners to refinance and use the huge amount of equity they will have in the home to pay off taxes.
Still, I seem to recall one family suing the show over it.
Excellent!
Rock on,good people!
(side comment:betcha the generous gift-giver wasn’t a Hillary-Obama-Edwards supporter,JMHO)
my apologies
Wonderful story!
There is no tax consequence to the recipient of a gift, no matter how large the gift. It could have been $100,000,000, without the waitress owing a dime in taxes.
However, the $10,000 gift limit is on the donor; a donor may give up to $10,000 in a taxable year to any person. That’s why families can often donate $40,000 to relatives; $10,000 from each spouse to each other spouse.
So, for a $10,000 gift, there are no income taxes due the waitress and no transfer tax consequences to the donor.
Not sure if its same story but an australian billionaire was tipping the casino waitresses $100,000 each time a drink was brought to him.

Actually, that refers to judging others hypocritically. There's nothing in the Bible that forbids judging wisely.
I used to work at Pizza Hut as a delivery driver. We never reported our full tip earnings.
The recipients have to pay bigtime. IIRC< I don’’t think anyone who has won the HGTV Dream Home Give-away has kept any of the places yet, due primarily to the tax burden.
