SWAT team member recovering at home after shooting
A Florida man implicated in a sheriffs deputy shooting was arraigned Friday.
David Sepulveda, 36, was arrested in early June by Drug Enforcement Administration agents on a federal drug-related warrant. He has been arraigned on an attempted capital murder charge connected to an incident involving his body guard.
The guard, Mario Cabrera Linares, shot at Cameron County SWAT team member Angel Perez during the execution of the warrant. Linares was killed during the exchange of gunfire.
Sepulveda, of the 3400 block of J. Leal Street in La Paloma, appeared before Cameron County Magistrate Judge Patricia A. Hernandez on the third-degree felony count. Hernandez set bond at $750,000.
Perez was shot in the face with an assault rifle in the shootout and was rushed to Valley Baptist Medical Center-Harlingen, where he underwent facial reconstructive surgery. He is now recovering at his Brownsville home.
The charge against Sepulveda is pending in the U.S. District Court Southern District of Texas. He is being held in Willacy County. U.S. Magistrate Judge Felix Recio denied Sepulveda bond in late-June, labeling him a flight risk.
According to federal court documents, Sepulveda faces one count of conspiracy to posses with intent to distribute a quantity of cocaine in excess of 5 kilograms and a quantity of marijuana in excess of 1,000 kilograms.
A pretrial conference is scheduled for Aug. 7 in U.S. District Judge Andrew S. Hanens courtroom.
Jury selection is scheduled for Aug. 9.
