Banking on Becoming President

After six months of fundraising, the candidates for president in 2008 have already raised more than $265 million. No presidential money chase has ever started so quickly. By some predictions, the eventual nominees will need to raise $500 million apiece to compete--a record sum. To find out where all this money is coming from, explore the options to the left. The next campaign finance reports are due to the Federal Election Commission by October 15, covering July through September.

The second quarter results seem just about in.

question, I thought individuals weren't allowed to donate more than $2,300. Yet, going through some of the top donors, looks like some donated about $9,000 each.

Don't those monies have to be given back?

I think it is 2300 each (husband and wife) for Primaries and General Election. Then you might be able to give to the Candidate’s PACs as well.

The site says, $2,300 per person and $4,600 for husband/wife.

But, I’m going through some of these top contributors, and there are people that have donated $9,000 a piece.

I don’t see a listing for companies. Are there limits for companies?

They can donate for both the Primary and the General Election so each person can donate 4600. I do not know where the rest comes from.

No, I’m copying. It says:

Contributions are limited to $2,300 per person for the primary election.

Couples may donate a total of $4,600. Qualified federal PACS may contribute $5,000 and non-qualified PACS may contribute $2,300.

I don’t see anything about businesses though.

I understand but they are allowed to donate the same amount for the general election now as well.

A lot of Hillary's money is for the general election.

How can you collect money for the general election if you aren’t in the general election yet?

And if you don’t make it to the general, does that money get returned?

Taken as a group the Dems have way more money. Their second tier guys have nesteggs approaching $10M. Ours are down around $1M.

It would be nice for some of these people to start dropping out soon. I hate to say it but if you can’t raise $1M in a quarter what is your chance to win. This is going to be a very media-driven, and thus costly, primary season.

If you have less name recognition and way less money, realistically how are you going to knock off Rudy or Romney (not to mention Thompson). I guess you can stay in till the first primary to make it all seem real, but at this point I think we’d do better being able to hear those more clearly in the debates.

I’m disapointed that Duncan Hunter, who has been my favorite has done so poorly in the money primary.

Thompson needs to fish or cut bait. This isn’t a freaking game and if he can’t figure out what the hell he’s doing we need to know now, not later.

He’s starting to piss me off with his coy non-candidate status. That was amusing for a minute, but it’s wearing thin fast in the harsh light of democrats with $50 million war chests.

Do you have any idea if donations are different than individuals?

Individuals are $2,300 max. How about companies?

>>> http://www.manta.com/coms2/dnbcompany_dp9bxt

That company might be donating some of the grants that were just received in this area to bring hydro and solar power.

I have no idea about the rules of grant monies either.

Did McCain-Feingold do away with soft money? Wasn’t soft money from businesses? I would hope that the masses who think Duncan Hunter is the greatest begin to dig deeper to financially support his campaign.

Please make your checks to:Hunter for President,

9340 Fuerte Drive, Suite 302, La Mesa, CA 91941-4164

Thank you.

So soft money is from businesses?

Then how do all these people (with the large campaign amounts) have monies from businesses???

Does this get audited?
