Elizabeth Edwards decries beating death of Sacramento man

Elizabeth Edwards told a prominent gay rights group Saturday night that her husband, presidential candidate John Edwards, would help repeal more than a thousand laws that discriminate against same-sex couples.

As she campaigns for her husband in California, Elizabeth Edwards has staked out an independent position on gay rights. She appeared last month at a breakfast before San Francisco's gay pride parade, where she announced her support for gay marriage.

The next day, her husband, John Edwards, said her position surprised even him. The former North Carolina Sen. opposes gay marriage but supports civil unions.

Her speech Saturday to the Human Rights Campaign was an effort to reassure a crucial constituency with growing political clout that while her husband disagrees with her on gay marriage he would be a champion for legislation that would protect same-sex couples from discrimination.

Citing the story of a Sacramento man who died after witnesses said he was beaten to death by men who thought he was gay, Edwards slammed President Bush for not doing anything to help protect gays and lesbians against violence.

"This president talks a lot about good and evil and the need to seek out evil doers," she told a packed auditorium. "But he doesn't seem to recognize the evil in hate crimes. The right to live without the fear of being murdered for whom we love is not a special right."

The death of Satendar Singh, 26, galvanized Sacramento's gay community and others who saw it as an outgrowth of anti-gay rhetoric coming from local evangelical Christian Slavic churches.

According to Singh's friends, the group that attacked him earlier this month as he was leaving a picnic at Lake Natomas were speaking Russian.

Damn Russians.

Well, there she goes again. It's as if she's trying to become the Liza Minelli of politics.

The Edwards want to have their cake and eat it, too. Both sides of the issue covered.......yeah, that’s the ticket!

Elizabeth Edwards is really pushing the gay agenda. Does she own any stock in Johnson and Johnson, makers of KY Jelly?

It doesn’t look like she, her husband or their party recognize the deaths of millions of innocents at abortion mills.

“Citing the story of a Sacramento man who died after witnesses said he was beaten to death by men who thought he was gay, Edwards slammed President Bush for not doing anything to help protect gays and lesbians against violence.

...snip...

Singh was punched once in the face and fell backward, hitting his head. He died July 5 after four days on life support.

Edwards said Singh’s story reminded her of Matthew Shepard, the gay college student who died after he was beaten and tied to a fence in Laramie, Wyoming, in 1998.”

Her imagination is certainly vivid. She is able to equate (what I think we will all agree was) a rather brutal beating accompanied by bondage (no comments from the kinkier amonst us) to a single punch in the face. I call BS!

This is pandering plain and simple.

Now Liz, shut up, get back on your campaign funded private jet and fly back to your manse near Chapel Hill where your “unkempt” neighbor can annoy you some more.

She should look into the murder of the man who called the cops on that “famous” Texas gay couple. He was also a gay man and an abused lover of one of the defendents.

He had a pending assault case against that man when he was murdered. The crime is still unsolved.

But then we aren’t supposed to notice abuse within the homosexual community.

What’s she gone on record saying about that couple that was raped and tortured and murdered in a supposed “carjacking” (they were kidnapped and the vehicle was quickly disposed of).

She’s able to make a bunch of promises she won’t have to keep.

It has always been an achilles heel for any "hate crimes officer" of any police department when someone reports they were attacked for being presumed gay when in fact they were not. Typically once it was clear that the victim was not gay then the passion to seek justice somehow disappeared almost immediately. Mrs. Edwards campaign to become President...I mean...her campaign to assist her husband's campaign for the Presidency has become decidely desperate when she is essentially calling to expand hate crime laws to cover crimes where some perpetrator's initial motivation was in fact unfounded (attack on non-gay for being presumed gay).

So in Mrs. Edwards World all one would have to claim is that they were attacked because someone THOUGHT they were gay and wallah! instant federal crime, instant heightened punishment status.

With this enforcement/judicial power at both the state and federal level the shenanigans that could be played by simply identifying a victim's party registration or political proclivities would be enormous especially if the intial written police reports don't jive with later "repressed memory" testimony.

Good question. Liz seems to have discovered a little-known Constitutional directive providing for direct election of First Ladies.

She sounds like a nasty customer.

If she insists on keeping up this typical vicious Rat talk, I couldn’t care less if she has cancer, even if it proves to be terminal. If she can’t take the heat, she should get out of the kitchen.

I'm tired of the laws on the books not being enough. We have murder, we have manslaughter, we have other categories along those lines. Take your pick.

They’re just looking for some attention. Obama and Hillary are getting all the press, so the desparation is setting in. Next they’ll be talking about the nations pedophiles and sex offenders and how unfair it is to have to divulge thier address to the public.

Gee, why didn't he help repeal any of those thousand laws when he was an actual legislator?

Elizabeth is right. President Bush, if he really cared, should have been there that day and prevented the assault.
I, for one, don’t know if I can ever forgive him for that.
