For those keeping track at home, the Azarakhsh is essentially a reverse-engineered Northrop F-5 with Russian avionics.

Producing a viable jet fighter is a very big step for Iran. It is a whole lot easier to expand and upgrade your native aircraft industry, than it is to establish that industry in the first place. The P35s, Curtis Hawks and Brewster Buffalos we were building in the late 1930s were not very good planes, compared to the ME 109.
Iran's Air Force doesn't plan to win an air superiority fight with the US Air Force. All they have to do keep out of such a fight, and upgraded F5s will let them dominate Iraq, Afghanistan and Pakistan, and (if their pilots are up to it) let them compete with the export model F16s of Turkey and F15s of Saudi Arabia.

The F-5E Tiger II was the first aircraft I crewed on.
As much as I loved working on my little Tiger II (74-0846), these planes will be TOAST against our front line fighters.

These jets are for flying all those Iraqi pilots who defected in Gulf War I, back to Iraq when we engage with Iran.
