Hey Chertoff, what about those employers, we need daily action on that, no welfare benefits to illegals, and some deportation too.

The Secure Fence Act signed by President Bush last year had called for 854 miles of double fence finished by May 30, 2008...

The law to build a fence has been passed. It is law. Build it. If they do not like it try and get an injunction.
I lived and worked all over the Texas border for many years and know many Tejanos as you call them. The ones I know are for the wall and restricting immigration.
You forget that Texas was conquered and Mexico ousted in the Mexican War. There are several very excellant fictional works describing the trauma that resulted from the war to both anglo and hispanic cirizens at the time.
The old famalies have intermingled for generations producing a complex geneological mix that carries over to properties. There is a considerable difference between the nuevo wetbacks and the original property owners who trace Mexican/Texican ancestry back for generations.
How long did it take the people of Israel to erect their wall? It was very effective and, as I recall, it didn’t take that long to construct it.
The government needs to stop hedging and follow a proven example of keeping people on their side of the border.
Good point about building the railroad. I have seen similar behavior from government before. The neighbors wanted a couple of traffic bumps put into the long downhill road near Casa RKV. The city put 8 of them in a 3/4 mile strip. It was planned to fail, and yep pretty soon people wanted them out. All the locals wanted was one or two to stop the drag racing. This, like building the border fence in an area like this one in Texas is designed to cause maximum grief and do as little as possible to actually stop illegal immigration.

You completely misunderstand the situation. There are lots of Texans with ancestors who fought in all our wars because they were citizens.
They trace back roots to ancestors who lived in the area before there was a Texas. Texas was taken by military force. Under President James K Polk another war was fought that defeated Santa Anna for once and for all. General Winfield Scott in a combined arms campaign, invaded Mexico from the Yucathan and captured Mexico City and the Halls of Montezuma.
They were not forced to leave after the war, Texas is big, and the large ranches were not confiscated just because the owners were Mexican. They became Texans and their people still are.
