Work on Texas border wall to begin soon: Chertoff

HOUSTON (Reuters) - Construction on a border wall in southern Texas is expected to begin by this autumn, despite strong local opposition, U.S. Homeland Security Secretary Michael Chertoff said in an interview published on Thursday.

Chertoff told the Houston Chronicle the federal government "can't rule out" using powers of eminent domain to seize land for the wall that is intended to stem the flow of illegal immigrants entering the United States from Mexico.

In heavily Hispanic southern Texas, where cultural and economic ties to Mexico run deep, local officials, business groups and environmentalists have spoken out against the wall as unnecessary and unwanted.

But Chertoff said national security was at stake, so the project will move ahead shortly.

"I expect we'll be doing some construction in Texas this fiscal year," he said, referring to the government fiscal year ending September 30.

I’m in favor of a wall all along the entire border, but why start it here, where there’s local opposition? Why not start it in Arizona, where the ranchers are crying out from relief from armed-gangs migrating north over their land?

Well, good then. You have a few months notice to pick up all your bambinos, and your belongings, and get the hell out of our country.

First of all, we can't be sure that the opposition is "real" or just "vocal"--as in carefully spun. We know that Bush doesn't want to build this thing.

Maybe they want a lot of noise, or are even engineering a lot of noise, to try to kill the project.

Bush and Mexico are like Bill and Monica.

A US Border should have something similar as a US Highway has, right-of-way, which in the case of a highway extends 200' from the centerline. I would think a US Border would have even more, for just this kind of thing. Also, I never did hear about congress appropriating money for this. When did that happen?

Now here’s an example of eminent domain as it was originally intended.

Trusting Chertoff on immigration is like trusting Rosie O’Donnell to guard the cakes as a bakery.

If some guy on the border doesn’t want a fence on his land, then lets just build it around his land. Hell, let him secede and join mexico if he wants.

I’ll believe it when I see it!

Bambino is Italian. Perhaps you're thinking of nino.

Why should Tejanos leave the country their ancestors fought for and which their families have lived in for hundreds of years?

Because Bush and the open-borders crowd really DOESN'T want to build it. It's like Chertoff said after the Senate bill died about enforcing the immigration laws, that we'll now start to see stories about families pulled apart, etc., resulting from a new emphasis on enforcement.

They hope that publicity from local opposition to the fence and sob stories in the press about "undocumented Americans" being sent back to Mexico will turn public opinion around and then they can get their amnesty bill passed, do some token work on a "virtual fence" and get back to building a superhighway for Mexican trucks into the heartland.

"I expect we'll be doing some construction in Texas this fiscal year,"

Sounds like a stone cold, clad in iron, guarantee. Not.

The stall continues.

I also expect to begin to be a major media mogul by autumn.

Chertoff is a disgrace.

Remember, the transcontinental railroad took 6 years with 1860’s technology - and the lack of a railroad wasn’t a terrorism risk. The fence should not take that long to build. Keep the pressure on!

Good point. I think you answered the question. If they built it where people really want it, and would praise it, then it wouldn't be so easy to kill the whole idea completely.
