The Dunkirk Democrats

Iraq War:His terms of surrender stymied, a petulant Harry Reid pulls a defense authorization bill from the Senate floor. Even the U.N. secretary-general warns of the consequences of a precipitous withdrawal. Democrats don't care.

The Democrats insist that they support our troops in Iraq, even if they don't support what they're doing there. Never mind that Rep. John Murtha thinks our troops are cold-blooded murderers, or that Sen. Ted Kennedy thinks they're operating places like Abu Ghraib "under new management."

But when their pillow fight over the Reid-Levin surrender amendment inevitably failed, Senate Majority Leader Reid decided to show that support by pulling a defense authorization bill from the floor that included items such as a 3.5% pay raise, funding for wounded veterans and money for the Mine-Resistant Ambush Protected trucks for our troops in Iraq and Afghanistan.

The Democrats support our troops so much that they're willing to use them as pawns in an effort to support legislation that might make their sacrifice meaningless.

Unfortunately, most of the voting public doesn’t have a clue as to what Dunkirk represents or how that applies to the Senate Dems.

You're right, it would make a good bumper sticker. And maybe if you're courting the senior citizen crowd, it would work. Unfortunately, because of our very expensive, crack (cocaine) educational system; the meaning would be lost on anyone under 40(?)

Revisionist history is hard at work. If they aren't changing it, they're downright burying it.

Recalling how the 1960s Hippies always screamed, "Never trust anyone over thirty!" I can only add that nowadays, anyone under fifty will probably earn a front seat on Leno 'Jaywalks' by saying they know Dunkirk is either the first word in 'Dunkirk Donuts' or Captain Kirk's immigrant grandfather's original name when he got to Ellis Island...

Chamberlain was stupid and naive but not a traitor.

The Democrats are more like the Vichy French or Quisling in Norway. We are in a war with barbarians and they are collaborating with the enemy. They would rather have an America in ruins where they are in charge than a strong and happy America where they are a minority. Sick.

Liberal patriotism: “Its not the man who bravely mans the walls of the fortress who is the patriot but the yellow bellied weasel who slinks down to gate in the middle of night and throws it open.”

My bumper sticker would read:

I SUPPORT HILLARY
the way she supports the troops.

Eh. It is a slander on the men of Dunkirk who brought their friends away safely, to fight another day, and continued the struggle to ultimate victory.

I was miffed when someone young and fun started talking about “Cut and Run Republicans” over drinks at her place.

She claimed the Republican party wanted to “bring the boys home” part way through WWII.

True?

What is true is that, pre-Pearl Harbor, 80% of Americans opposed American entry into WWII - which is about how well Nevil Chamberlain's "Peace in our time" appeasement polled in Britain, before Hitler and Stalin invaded Poland.

It's also true that FDR's stance toward Hitler hardened dramatically after his June 22, 1941 invasion of the USSR.

And it's true that FDR tried to convince Americans who had been against US involvement in WWII before Pearl Harbor to vote against incumbent politicians who had also opposed US involvement in WWII before Pearl Harbor. It didn't work, and the Democrats nearly lost control of Congress in the 1942 election on that account.

The country was united in fighting WWII, much more so than FDR deserved.

The New Dealers' War:

FDR and the War Within World War II
by Thomas J. Fleming, gives amazing insight into American politics and strategy in WWII.

Nonsense. You might have found a few isolationists or pro-German types saying so, but the party and its leaders emphatically did not. They ran against FDRs socialism, unpreparedness at Pearl Harbor, restoring more of a free market system once the war was over, etc. Dewey was an internationalist. Even Taft, the original principled isolationist, supported the war wholeheartedly once Japan attacked.
