A decorated NYPD cop accused of betraying his badge to rob drug dealers was caught on wiretaps sounding like one of the hoods he put away, sources said.
"Did you call me?" Officer Darren Moonan asked as he and another accused member of the robbery crew were caught on wiretaps May 29 while allegedly planning a Nassau County heist for later that night. "I'm here. You have any work?"
Moonan made sure the crew knew he was up for anything, sources said.
"All right. All right. I got my support with whatever you need . . . with whatever you need, I'll have it," Moonan, 27, said.
"I know," his alleged crime partner said. "Of course, I know."
Moonan was busted by the feds last week as the alleged security guy and wheelman for an Albanian drug and robbery crew that ripped off some $800,000 from fellow pushers.
Manhattan federal prosecutors charge he tipped the crew off to police activity and ferried the drug money - armed with his NYPD gun and badge.
"He was the gang's insurance policy, or so they thought. They boasted they had a cop on their crew," a law enforcement source said.
A fellow crook called Moonan on May 29 to make sure the cop was armed and ready for a job that night.
"Listen, yo. . . . Leave work. . . . Listen, leave work, you got my gold, my thing, right? My badge. . . . Hello?"
"Your what?" Moonan asked.
"You got, you got my badge, my jacket, all that stuff?"
"Yeah," Moonan said.
"All right, you got to go get the rest. Get all that stuff. Bring two pieces \[guns\]. Get everything. Let's go."
Fellow cops were surprised at the charges because Moonan was always telling his colleagues at the 102nd Precinct in Richmond Hill, Queens, how to do their job, sources said.
"Some of the cops disliked him because he was strutting his stuff because he passed the sergeant's exam. He thought he knew everything and would talk down to some of the younger cops," a police source said.
In his six years on the job, Moonan had made 112 arrests, including 35 for felonies. Moonan comes from a family of cops. His older brother is a police officer in Queens, and his father was a police officer in Trinidad, sources said.
Moonan's lawyer, Bradley .Simon, said his client joined the force in July 2001 and received commendations for his work on 9/11.
Moonan was busted July 8 and held without bail after a hearing in Manhattan Federal Court. He has been suspended from the NYPD.
Reads like an episode of “The Shield”.
Wonder why these kinds of threads don’t get the same attention as the pot threads? This is the side of the WOsD’s and some drug users that shows the rampant corruption. Bumping for the statist amongst US. Blackbird.
The Albanians are statists?
Ummmm, No. Are they FReepers? That would be the "statist amongst US" I was referring to. You know, the ones that ignore the corruption that is the WOsD's. Blackbird.
Exactly,,that same thing. Except it was for the Armenians.
