Edward C. Allred, who parlayed his earnings from a statewide chain of more than 20 abortion clinics into a fortune, is reportedly recuperating from a stroke at his home in Palm Desert.
Allred, currently owner of Los Alamitos Race Course, was hospitalized for two days at Eisenhower Medical Center in Rancho Mirage following the stroke, described by doctors as “very minor.”
"I'm fine," Allred told the American Quarter Horse Racing Journal. "I have some minor speech issues right now, but a little time will take care of that. I'm going to spend a couple of weeks in the desert working on my golf game and then I will be back at my desk at Los Alamitos."
Allred established the Family Planning Associates chain of abortion clinics in 1969, two years after abortion was legalized in California. With more than 20 clinics in California, FPA at one time was the largest privately held abortion-clinic chain in the U.S.
Allred boasted that he worked from 6 a.m. to midnight performing abortions on “planeloads” of women, trying not to spend more than five minutes with each patient. "We've been pioneers in so many ways," he once told a reporter. "We streamlined, we made efficiencies, we employed the suction technique better than anyone, and we eliminated needless patient-physician contact."
In 1980, Allred claimed to have personally aborted 250,000 fetuses during the previous 12 years. Since then, Allred said he stopped counting. That same year, Allred infuriated Hispanics when he told the San Diego Union-Tribune, “Population control is too important to be stopped by some right-wing pro-life type. Take the new influx of Hispanic immigrants. Their lack of respect for democracy and social order is frightening.
