Forrest was very capable but the Army of Virginia and the Shenandoah valley were the heart of the Confederacy and that's where the Civil War was fought and lost by them. The War Between the States was lost in the Western theater.
Forrest was an unprecedented cavalryman and commander - much better than Sheridan.

The War Between the States was lost in the Western theater. Where Forrest fought. He was a constant thorn in the side of the Union army but nothing he did halted, or really even slowed the inevitable Union victory.

“Forrest was an unprecedented cavalryman and commander - much better than Sheridan.”
Even Wm. T. Sherman agreed with that assessment.
