County Bans Trans Fats - New rules: Menus must say what's in your meal
The Seattle Times ^ | 7/20/07 | Carol M. Ostrom

Despite objections from restaurant owners and food-industry officials, the King County Board of Health on Thursday banned artificial trans fat and required nutrition labeling for menu items in chain restaurants.

With the vote, King County joins a handful of jurisdictions in the country to ban artificial trans fats in restaurant meals and becomes only the second to require nutrition labeling on menus.

While most restaurant owners and their supporters testified against the trans-fat ban -- most said they're already getting rid of trans fats but they simply hate mandates -- they saved their harshest words for the nutrition-labeling requirement.

Chris Clifford, a Renton resident who said he's owned several restaurants in King County, said very few customers need labeling to know that a 16-ounce steak rolled in butter is fattening.

"I have a six-letter word to describe them: It's 'stupid!' " Clifford told the board. "You can't help stupid people." Instead of menu labeling, Clifford suggested a "warning label" on the restaurant door: "Eating here is fattening and could kill you."

Exactly. Liberals want to save us from ourselves. I say "bugger off!"

Yep

You always get the government that a majority of the voters who vote inpose on you.

I the people in King county want to put a stop to this kind of madness...they have to change their county "leadership".....the lesser of two evils, in most cases.

This is exactly the kind of harassment busineses found themselves suffering under in fascist Germany in the 1930s. The Nazi party unleashed thousands of functionairies who would go to business owners and demand they conform to rules and regulstions these minor party members might demand.

These rules might change from hour to hour and day to day. Business owners were perplexed and many took to studying Marxism to try to understand what the government wanted from them. The answer, of course, was control of private property and business and the demand by the state that they carry out the edicts of the state for the greater common good, as defined by the state.

Those who didn’t comply would find their business license cancelled or see heavy fines imposed for non-compliance. Many businesses folded shop and left Germany during this period.

The experience of business owners living under the fascist state was told in the book “The Vampire Economy,” now out of print and difficult to find.

Can we bring our own trans fats and share them with other patrons or will there be little, “No trans fats allowed in this facility” signs accompanied by a red circle with a slash?

Do we need a license to carry them? Can we leave them in our cars?

Soon we'll be lining up at the government food distribution centers (like you see in Africa) with our government issued bowls to receive our daily government approved ration of tofu slop.

There will be no more dairy farms, beef farms Turkey and chicken farms, pig farms, only government approved soy bean and other grains and vegetable farms growing government approved "organic" crops the government approved way (by hand- no farm machinery allowed)

If we don't put a stop to these markist dictators, it won't be long before this country resembles the USSR at the turn of the 20th century.

Gee, I wonder if they'll ban Chinese food,
Or the tainted foods imported from China?

Naw, that wouldn't be politically correct.

On second thought,
How does a Government get away with banning a food product?

This is not constitutional in any way, shape, or form..

I wonder when the liberals will start ordering yellow armbands worn by everyone who the state deems to be "fat".

"We certainly wouldn't want them in contact with children and giving the kids bad nutrition ideas. Plus they cost the state health care system more money so we need other diligent citizens to stop them from eating fattening foods."

(My crazy idea is tomorrow's law of the land.)

A lot of people who grunted and squealed with delight when government banned smoking in restaurants are now “outraged” by being forbidden to eat certain foods. I have to laugh. When you let the government take away freedoms from people you don’t like, you can’t be all shocked when the same government takes away something YOU enjoy.

If you were a large chain restaurant, you would have to destroy all of your menus and reprint new ones with calorie content of each item. Let’s say you have 50 restaurants in King County and each of the restaurants has 150 menus printed. Let’s say each menu set (some menus are five pages or more) cost $3.00 (a modest price) to print. That’s $22,500. I wonder what the actual cost of printing a menu, like Denney’s which multiple pages printed on a plastic type material?

If you have 50 restaurants in King County that can seat, say 200 people at a time (your example called for 150 menus)that means if you serve breakfast, lunch, and dinner with no table turnover per meal, you’re serving over ten million meals per year. $22,500 would be less than your annual parsley bill!

“Trans fats are POISON ... unless they are natural. “

And yet there is ZERO evidence that shows a cause and effect between trans fat intake and disease.
