A Quebec woman is looking for redress after her husband was misdiagnosed as being insane. Turns out, he actually had multiple sclerosis. Anatole Otis was 50-years-old when his health began to deteriorate 14 years ago. A neurologist told him he was insane. A T-Q-S news report says it wasn't until 2004, 14 years after his initial diagnosis, that a second neurologist discovered the truth. His wife, Carmen Plourde, believes appropriate medication would have slowed the disease's progression. Otis has been confined to a bed for several years. The Multiple Sclerosis Society of Canada says the disease was difficult to diagnose as recent as the early 1990's. Still, the group is stunned a neurologist confused multiple sclerosis with a mental illness. (CP)

I’m sorry but there’s no clinical condition called “insanity”. That is a historically entrenched layperson’s catchall term for schizophrenia or other psychological condition characterized by a complete break with reality. The term may fit some people, but I have a hard time believing a trained physician would use it in a professional diagnostic context.

hum Michael Moores health Care? yes we in America have our flaws in the health care system but I would not trade it for any other. As a school project I had to view sicko for extra credit will I will take my lower grade vs watching that man. He will be in need of the USA Health Care System that he attacks, he is overweight, and is a health care problem waiting to happen he will be glad he is being treated in the USA when he is in need of it.
14 years of being tortured and mistreated by the gross medical malpractice that is Canadian Sicko type horrific “healthcare.” The poor soul is now a bed-ridden permanent cripple.
M.S requires an MRI to make a diagnosis. The problem is that New York City has more MRI machines than all of Sicko Canada. But hey, the third world treatment is free!

I was avoiding it too but I finally agreed to go as a favor to my son. I was surprised that the film was quite interesting. I think that even most people who totally disagree with Moore's political philosophy would find that this movie does have a lot of thought-provoking content.
If Moore had made a film about how to lead a healthy lifestyle then obviously he would be a hypocrite, but his size is not really relevant to the subject of this movie IMHO.

This didn’t have anything to do with socialized medicine, per se. It happened because the doctor who made the (mis-) diagnosis was an idiot.
Now, it’s quite possibly true that a socialized medical system is forced to hire less-qualified individuals (in all capacities) because there is no incentive to practice medicine when your prices (i.e. salary)are fixed and your options are limited (i.e. you can’t take a patient’s temperature because the hospitals ONE thermometer is use on another floor).
I’m no fan of socialized ANYTHING, but..We are rapidly approaching the point in this country where people are going to have to make some very serious choices, and one of them is going to be how we get ourselves the yearly check-up and those eyedrops when we only make $60k a year. The Baby Boomers WILL manage to repeat their parent’s performance and force successive Congresses to kow-tow to them by not only destroying Social Security further, but when they start demanding subsidized bladder-control meds and breast enlargements from Medicare.
And they will, because the Baby Boomers are the most selfish people on the planet (see: the Clintons).
Perhaps some form of socialized medicine will have to be considered: but I would reserve it for those who are asking for it, like Baby Boomers, and then let them run it on the Canadian/Swedish/Outer Mongolian Model.
The rest of us will use real doctors and hospitals, and pay our own way, thank you.
Also, we should take this opportunity to learn the lessons which this incident teaches us:
1. Always get a second opinion (I assume these people didn;t because they would have had to pay for it) on anything you feel you need to, or anything major.
2. Never get a headache in Canada; a Canadian doctor (originally from India, or perhaps, Albania, who graduated 287th in a class of 151) might recommend amputation.
