Unruly schoolboys or sex offenders?
The Oregonian ^ | July 22, 2007 | SUSAN GOLDSMITH

Posted on 07/22/2007 6:35:08 AM PDT by hiho hiho

The two boys tore down the hall of Patton Middle School after lunch, swatting the bottoms of girls as they ran -- what some kids later said was a common form of greeting.

But bottom-slapping is against policy in McMinnville Public Schools. So a teacher's aide sent the gawky seventh-graders to the office, where the vice principal and a police officer stationed at the school soon interrogated them.

After hours of interviews with students the day of the February incident, the officer read the boys their Miranda rights and hauled them off in handcuffs to juvenile jail, where they spent the next five days.

Now, Cory Mashburn and Ryan Cornelison, both 13, face the prospect of 10 years in juvenile detention and a lifetime on the sex offender registry in a case that poses a fundamental question: When is horseplay a crime?

Good. Maybe their little all expense paid vacation gave them some time to think.

Bad. Extreme over-reaction.

“Good. Maybe their little all expense paid vacation gave them some time to think.”

What about, how the ‘justice’ system contains little justice, and how their lifetime of punishment far outpaces their ‘crime’?

So you think a Jr. High boy slapping a girl’s bottom is worthy of 10 years in jail and a lifetime on a sex offender’s registry?

I think that they should be disciplined, but this is going beyond too far.

Thank God I grew up in the 50's and 60's.

If I was a kid today .... wait.. I wouldn't be -- I'd have gotten the Chair by the time I was Ten for some pc 'hate' crime, some made up 'sex' offense or making a 'Terrorist Threat' with my Nichols Stallion 45 cap pistol.

Thank god for prison rapists. A little forced sodomy will do these boys good and put them on the straight and narrow.

I suppose “noogies” and Indian (excuse me, Native American) burns are right out too?

That school sounds like a sterile source of amusement.

The police should have told the school administration to piss-off...

“I think that they should be disciplined, but this is going beyond too far.”

Agreed however this is their first year in middle school (Jr High) ... times have changed I guess ... but I would think that “first year students” would be a bit more reserved and be learning from their upper-classmates what is acceptable and what is not.

Something is missing here.

They did not break a law. They broke a rule.

Amen. 50's and early 60's were the best time to be a kid.

As I was reading, I was thinking - gee, this article is about some elementary-aged boys, maybe 2nd - 4th grade, who were just playing around (I still remember some of the things “we” did at that age).

But then I read that this was 7th graders. Considering I know of children of that age who are already engaging in sexual acts, I would take this quite seriously.

For those of you who would choose to believe that 7th graders “don’t mean anything by it” - you had better open your eyes and see reality. Kids have been indoctrinated into the sexual freedom program (safe sex training in elementary) and have no guidance from home - and thus are engaging in activities most of us didn’t even dream of at earlier and earlier ages.

Now- is a criminal record and/or time in juvenile hall merited - I don’t think so. But on the other hand, this isn’t the “Innocent game” that it might have been 30 years ago... Hours of interrogation, and being hauled off in cuffs was probably a bit excessive. But a foot has to be put down. I would just prefer the foot didn’t have a jack-boot on it.

And keeping you off a jury will do the country good.

One day in after-school detention would’ve been enough.

In my day when this happened you let them know you didn’t like it, if they did it again you had your big brother beat them up.

Naa - 40’s and 50’s - Pre TV was the best! One used their creativity and had fun.
