The two boys tore down the hall of Patton Middle School after lunch, swatting the bottoms of girls as they ran -- what some kids later said was a common form of greeting.
But bottom-slapping is against policy in McMinnville Public Schools. So a teacher's aide sent the gawky seventh-graders to the office, where the vice principal and a police officer stationed at the school soon interrogated them.
After hours of interviews with students the day of the February incident, the officer read the boys their Miranda rights and hauled them off in handcuffs to juvenile jail, where they spent the next five days.
Now, Cory Mashburn and Ryan Cornelison, both 13, face the prospect of 10 years in juvenile detention and a lifetime on the sex offender registry in a case that poses a fundamental question: When is horseplay a crime?

Good. Maybe their little all expense paid vacation gave them some time to think.
Cane them in the village square and then castrate them /sarc off
(no more of this boys-being-boys stuff.....we need more sissys, right?)
Bad. Extreme over-reaction.
“Good. Maybe their little all expense paid vacation gave them some time to think.”
What about, how the ‘justice’ system contains little justice, and how their lifetime of punishment far outpaces their ‘crime’?
So you think a Jr. High boy slapping a girl’s bottom is worthy of 10 years in jail and a lifetime on a sex offender’s registry?
I think that they should be disciplined, but this is going beyond too far.
No but 5 days in jail will do the punks good
If I was a kid today .... wait.. I wouldn't be -- I'd have gotten the Chair by the time I was Ten for some pc 'hate' crime, some made up 'sex' offense or making a 'Terrorist Threat' with my Nichols Stallion 45 cap pistol.
Thank god for prison rapists. A little forced sodomy will do these boys good and put them on the straight and narrow.
I suppose “noogies” and Indian (excuse me, Native American) burns are right out too?
That school sounds like a sterile source of amusement.
The police should have told the school administration to piss-off...
“I think that they should be disciplined, but this is going beyond too far.”
Agreed however this is their first year in middle school (Jr High) ... times have changed I guess ... but I would think that “first year students” would be a bit more reserved and be learning from their upper-classmates what is acceptable and what is not.
Something is missing here.
They did not break a law. They broke a rule.
Amen. 50's and early 60's were the best time to be a kid.
As I was reading, I was thinking - gee, this article is about some elementary-aged boys, maybe 2nd - 4th grade, who were just playing around (I still remember some of the things “we” did at that age).
But then I read that this was 7th graders. Considering I know of children of that age who are already engaging in sexual acts, I would take this quite seriously.
For those of you who would choose to believe that 7th graders “don’t mean anything by it” - you had better open your eyes and see reality. Kids have been indoctrinated into the sexual freedom program (safe sex training in elementary) and have no guidance from home - and thus are engaging in activities most of us didn’t even dream of at earlier and earlier ages.
Now- is a criminal record and/or time in juvenile hall merited - I don’t think so. But on the other hand, this isn’t the “Innocent game” that it might have been 30 years ago... Hours of interrogation, and being hauled off in cuffs was probably a bit excessive. But a foot has to be put down. I would just prefer the foot didn’t have a jack-boot on it.
And keeping you off a jury will do the country good.
One day in after-school detention would’ve been enough.
In my day when this happened you let them know you didn’t like it, if they did it again you had your big brother beat them up.
“Amen. 50’s and early 60’s were the best time to be a kid.”
Naa - 40’s and 50’s - Pre TV was the best! One used their creativity and had fun.
MORE than sufficient punishment right there.
I wasn’t there, but my guess is they just thought they were being funny. I share your concern about the sex ed teachings in schools these days, but this sounds like one of those ha-ha-ha-gotcha joking around behaviors. It warrants a sent to the principal’s office and maybe even detention for one day. Unless there’s more to the story that’s not mentioned in the article...
Ridiculous. Minor sexual horseplay. All part of the feminization of America. Castrating young boys.
Reasonable punishment? One day’s suspension or a stern lecture...if that
“if they did it again you had your big brother beat them up.”
And it worked! But that was long ago in a universe far away.
I wasn’t around in the 40’s but I bet it was great being a kid then. I don’t think we lost our innocence as a nation till the late 60’s. The early 60’s were fun to be a kid in though. I still bear the knee scars from my childhood caused from bicycle crashes. lol
Insanity.
I was a teenaged prevert.

“however this is their first year in middle school (Jr High)”
Correction: 7th is the second year for them ... Hmmmmm
But, then, I can see that you’re all in favor of the feminization of America.
You don’t think they broke a law?
Try going up to someone on the street and swatting them on the behind.
People tend to think all laws are suspended in the playground.
I think the boys should have to line up and let the girls spank them, then everyone is even. :)
p.s. Yes the punishment is too severe.
It is rapidly becomming illegal to show any form of sexual interest (pats, kissing, soon hand holding no doubt etc) between heterosexual teens, despite the fact that they go through puberty years earlier. At least in the past it was something parents took care of, but now it's all about state involvement. As the age of maturity increases in this country, one will have extrapolate out to age 25 before legal sexual intercourse between consenting heterosexuals is allowed by the state. I stress heterosexual, because we know public scohools encourage homosexual behavior, and they will back off in those instances.
Actually I'd be pretty confused if I was a teenager theese days. Sex Ed promotes sex, but if teens then try to explore it in any way (however minor), they get hauled off to the police and put in a sex offender registry.
Soon a quater of the population will be in the sex offender registry, we'll have to make another one and call it "the REAL sex offender registry" and reserve that for the real rapists out there.
Face it, for the people in favor of this kind of treatment for boisterous boys, their crime is that they’re not girls. They would forgive them if they acted like girls, but that is their only hope for forgiveness. Be sissies or pay the price.
Geez, I’d hate to see what you’d do to them if they swiped a cookie.
” I bet it was great being a kid then.”
Yeppers - go anywhere without any worries alone or with a friend or 2. Only rule - be home by 5:30 for dinner. Things started degrading in the late 50’s in my experience.
I'd go with the "no guidance from home" part: kindergarten and first grade teachers have noted that some of their students are coming to school & simulating sex acts on the playgrounds & using language most of us would find unthinkable from such small children, and the children have learned that at home.
When Mommy never married and has a string of boyfriends staying over, etc., what are kids going to learn?
You simpletons, stm, go ahead, throw em in jail, cow the whole male population.
Now when jihad johnny, who was taught to field strip his ak-47 at five, gets here, his job will be done for him by these male hating pukes that run the schools.
Hope these b!tches like burkas.
Where I went to school, if the girls didn’t like it THEY would have beat them up! Then the girls’ boyfriend would have had his turn. Problem Solved!
What CRIME was committed here? If they would have murdered one of the girls they would have gotten off easier.
Yes. Not only are the lunatics running the asylum, they now own it.
I used to snap bra straps when I was in school.
I learned how to run real fast too.
Never got “jail time” though.
When it's race based. /s
I would bet that these boys will do their best to avoid casual contact with women forever. They sure as hell won’t want any of those humorless feminazi’s around them in the workplace — and, if he or some of his friends should become managers in business someday, women won’t understand why none of those guys want any of them around.
If snapping bra's is an issue then bra's should be banned.
It worked for gun's...
Ahhhhhhh! Those were the days.
How many pencils did you drop in class???
Practically every thread on FR boils down to that..(even the the terrorism ones too. Christian Vacuum?...Hello Islam.)
School choice bump
Oh God, not only could I not hold onto a pencil, but the buggers rolled really far too!
Then came plastic straws in the lunchroom and that revolutionized the art of the well placed spitball.
They missed butt swatting training because the school was short of cucumbers in condom training and they were held back in their previous class.
Yes, I think they were.
I recall how my mom said the late 20's and 30's were 'safer' (This was in Chicago during the Capone wars and Dillenger) as you didn't have to lock your doors at night and the gangsters only killed gangsters, and sex preverts(sic) didn't roam at will. That's all well and good but heck, most had zero or only the basics because of FDR's Great Depression.
But 'we' were there when everything good and cool literally exploded into existence: hi-fi and stereo, 'Webcor' Reel to Reel Tape Recorders, better televisions (Magnavox 27" B&W) and then color tv. Schwinn Bicycles & 'English Racers', the coolest 'Toys' ever, cars like the '57 Chevy and residential Air Conditioning (most everyone could afford a window unit).
And we could pretty much roam the neighborhood from daybreak to when 'the street lights came on' :-)
