senior Foreign Office official

Same as our State Department types.

'nuff said.

BTW, "senior", might just mean "long serving"/"old", rather than "high ranking".

Leftists always do this. They say that if more civilians get killed then we’ve lost, knowing how easy it is for the savages to kill civilians. The savages then oblige knowing that it will hasten our surrender.

called for thousands more soldiers to be deployed to take on the resurgent Taliban

How do these newspapers define 'resurgent'. The vaunted Spring offensive by the Taliban didn't happen. Instead, they got a bunch of their leaders knocked off due to spies we've been able to place in their midst. And since that happened, they've been turning on and killing suspected infiltraitors.

So far, the only Taliban resurgence I've seen is a resurgence in favorable PR they get from the press. In fact, if I didn't know better, I would say that it looks like the press (both in Europe and here) is rooting for Taliban to win.

He said that British troops were losing the battle for "hearts and minds" because of rising civilian casualties and war damage.

Shoot them until they agree with you. This is a war, not a popularity contest.

Exactly how many wars has been won by winning the “hearts and minds”?

Guess Sherman and Attila the Hun was military failures.
