Alabama Abortions Down Nearly 50 Percent Since 1980

Abortions in Alabama have been cut nearly in half over the past two decades, public health records show, dropping from 21,000 in 1980 to 11,656 procedures last year, The Birmingham News reports.

"There's no doubt in my mind that the passage and enforcement of incremental pro-life laws like parental consent, 24-hour reflection period and mandated ultrasound before an abortion is performed have contributed to Alabama's drop in abortions," said Carrie Gordon Earll, senior analyst for bioethics at Focus on the Family Action. "Such incremental laws save lives and move the culture toward a day when abortion is no longer accepted or desired."

A third of women receiving abortions in 2005 had already terminated at least one pregnancy, according to state statistics.

I don’t have Alabama specific numbers but, in other good news, teen pregnancy nation wide is down by about half too but I have read that the greatest reduction is on the east and west coasts.

I expect that a generation ago women were aborting those girls who were most likely to grow up to have abortions.

Abortion is usually done to cover up an inconvenient pregnancy, that’s all. All the talk of the deeply personal, anguishing, medical choice is largely a cover for that fact that most of these life & death decisions are made for the sake of convenience.

Improvements in birth control lessens the need for abortions in the present day. That’s all.

That’s one reason I strongly object to efforts to stigmatize the availability and use of birth control. If people have sex and they don’t want babies or abortions they should use birth control. Efforts to oppose this have the main effect of increasing unwanted pregnancies.

I agree. Some folks are both passionately against abortion and birth control. There is just no pleasing some people.

I suspect most of those opposing the availability of birth control are well meaning and motivated by morality and religion.

But there are some who see female sexuality as a threat and they see a need for control.

I hate that word “birth control”. The objective is not trying to prevent birth, rather it is trying to prevent pregnancy. It should more accurately be called “contraceptives”.

Please prove to me that there is a mainstream group out there against contraceptives. (And you can’t use a group that is against giving away condoms to schoolchildren as an example).

I don’t think they’ve ever said it ex-cathedra, but the Roman Catholic Church is one.

At any rate, this probably has to do with a few things, namely, more availability of birth control, and the fact that all of our major cities are positioned in a way where people can easily leave the state for an abortion, and I suspect many do.

Thewre are also a number of employers who drop contraception from their healthcare even though it raises healthcare costs.

And the has been congressional opposition to U.N. programs on the gorunds that the health programs would include condoms.

Also here is a web page that claims “(PROVAN, BARROW, CALVIN, LUTHER, various WESTMINSTER DIVINES, and a host of others, exhibiting the unanimous PROTESTANT OPPOSITION to CONTRACEPTION prior to the 20th century - WITH MUCH FREE INFORMATION” - I do not know the accuracy.
