By contrast, look at the British handling of the Indian practice of suttee, the act of burning a widow on her dead husband’s funeral pyre, back in the early 1800s. A famous quote from Sir Charles Napier, while governor of one of the states of India, on the subject:
“It is your custom to burn widows. Very well. We also have a custom: when men burn a woman alive, we tie a rope around their necks and hang them. Build your funeral pyre and beside it my carpenters will build a gallows. You may follow your national custom - then we shall follow ours.”
We need more of that sort of attitude regarding indigenous “culture”.
I’m assuming that “indigenous community” is the PC way to refer to Aborigines in Australia?
