QUOTE OF THE DAY
President and Mrs. Bush Saddened by Death of Mohammad Zahir Shah
Laura and I are saddened by the death of Mohammad Zahir Shah, who was King of Afghanistan from 1933 to 1973.

Zahir Shah was a monumental figure in Afghan history, and his life spanned vast changes in that country's political system. He returned to Afghanistan as an ordinary citizen in 2002, shortly after the Taliban regime was removed from power, and continued to play an important part in the life of his country. Zahir Shah supported the goal of a representative and freely elected government in his homeland, and he encouraged Afghanistan toward democracy and stability. His presence in Afghanistan as a private citizen and "Father of the Nation" for the past several years has been an important factor in rebuilding Afghanistan.

On behalf of the American people, Laura and I extend our condolences to Mohammad Zahir Shah's family and to the people of Afghanistan.

Just have to tell y’all something. As some know, I had a torn rotator cuff on the same shoulder I had surgery on in August 2005. Well, I went to PT today for the first time since our trip. My PT was amazed and started going to get people to see what I could do. When I went there the first time, I could barely move my arm. Now, I could do anything she told me to do. I told her it was a miracle and the train trip that helped!

WEEKEND

The White House is seen in morning sunlight in Washington as President Bush, who is in Camp David, Md., transferred the powers of the presidency to Vice President Dick Cheney on Saturday, July 21, 2007, just before being sedated for a routine screening to detect colon cancer. The temporary transfer of power ended when he sent a second letter to the congressional leaders advising that he is resuming the powers of the presidency immediately.
