Libya: Bulgarian nurses and doctor released from prison, depart to Bulgaria

Libya: Bulgarian nurses and the doctor on the way towards Sofia

The Bulgarian nurses and the doctor condemned in Libya were released this morning. They are on the way towards Sofia, announced an official statement of the presidency of the French Republic.

“The plane of the French Republic has just taken off Libya bound for Sofia with on its board Cécilia Sarkozy, the Police chief European with the foreign relations Bénita Ferrero-Waldner, the secretary general of the Elysium Claude Guéant, the nurses and the doctor”, specifies the official statement. The Bulgarian nurses and the doctor are awaited 09h45 local (08h45 Swiss) with the airport of Sofia, specified the Bulgarian ministry of the Foreign Affairs.

The five Bulgarian nurses and the doctor of Palestinian extraction spent eight years and half of prison to Libya, condemned to have inoculated the virus of the AIDS to Libyan children. Their death sentence was commuted last week to prison sentence to life, opening the way with their extradition towards Sofia.

The Bulgarian medical workers sentenced to life in a Libyan AIDS case but allowed to serve their terms at home will be pardoned on their arrival in Sofia, a foreign ministry spokesman said.

Piracy still works in the Mediterranean. The Libyans were bought off, and their hostages saved by paying the ransom.

The enthusiasts see this as a breakthough. More likely it is an encouragement for more legalistic kidnappings and hostage-takings.
