Taliban militants seek $100,000 for call to S. Korean hostages

(Kyodo) _ Taliban kidnappers in Afghanistan have demanded $100,000 from the South Korean government in return for direct contact with 23 South Korean abductees, an Afghan official said Tuesday.

"The Taliban, in a contact to us (Tuesday), asked for $100,000 in return for a direct phone contact between the (South) Korean delegation and the (South) Korean abductees," said Khowaja Ahmad Sedeqi, a member of an Afghan delegation mediating between the Taliban and South Korean officials.

He also said the kidnappers have asked for the same amount of money if the South Korean delegation wants to have a recent photo of the abductees to verify that they are safe and sound and with the Taliban.

The kidnappers did, however, extend Monday for another 24 hours a deadline they had set for their demands to be met before they begin killing hostages.

They have also asked for direct contact between them and a South Korean delegation in Kabul to tackle the hostage-taking.

The South Koreans, members of a Christian group, were taken hostage on the weekend and the Taliban, which first called for all South Korean troops to leave Afghanistan, now say they will kill the hostages if the Afghan government does not release Taliban prisoners.

South Korea had already planned to withdraw their forces from Afghanistan by the year's end and a Taliban spokesman has said that would satisfy their initial demand.

Judging from their behavior, haggling over $100K, these guys must be small time local Talibans. The trouble may start if big boys swoop down from Pakistan and take over the hostages.

Let’s see...Christians are worth a lot of money to a jihadi OR Christians will be killed anyway.

Time will tell.

Praying for the Koreans...
In Jesus’ Holy name.
Amen.

Didn’t the movie “Proof of Life” have some scenes about this scenario? You never pay for a proof of life - only for the hostage. If they have already killed the hostage, then your money is down the drain - so don’t pay for the proof of life.

The South Korean government should announce they will send an additional 26,000 troops to Afghanistan if the 26 hostages are not released. For each hostage killed, wipe out a town.
