American support for the initial invasion of Iraq has risen somewhat as the White House has continued to ask the public to reserve judgment about the war until General David Petraeus files his report in the fall. In a New York Times/CBS News poll conducted over the weekend, 42 percent of Americans said that taking military action in Iraq was the right thing to do, while 51 percent said the United States should have stayed out of Iraq.

I think you’re right. Desert Storm didn’t last long enough for the left to get fully organized for defeat, and it therefore did not discredit their worldview to any irreparable degree.
It is very different now, the left has gone all out for defeat for years on end. They have staked everything on defeat and failure in Iraq. They are desperate and they know they are in a race against the clock to force a political defeat before our troops can crush the insurgency.

Agreed. Just like the Axis powers at the end of WWII they won’t go down without a vicious fight.
If we had a balanced media the approval for this war would be 70-75%. jmo
