Gulf watch: Red Cross under fire for allegedly withholding aid from Katrina victims
Facing South ^ | July 23, 2007 | Staff

The People's Hurricane Relief Fund and Oversight Committee held a press conference this morning in front of their New Orleans office to protest the alleged withholding of funds from Hurricane Katrina victims by the American Red Cross.

PHRF charges that the humanitarian aid organization is concealing money available through the Means to Recovery program, which is part of its third-phase recovery efforts for people who suffered losses in Katrina, Rita and Wilma. The first phase was emergency response, sheltering and feeding, while the second phase was financial assistance.

According to PHRF, the Means to Recovery program is supposed to allocate a maximum of $20,000 per family to cover occupational costs, housing, furnishing, personal living needs and health costs. This could cover anything from eyeglasses to a used vehicle to education costs.

In the discussion on FNC this morning it was alleged that the Red Cross is withholding 41 million dollars from the victims. (?)

I’m ENTITLED to this charity’s money and I WANT MY MONEY NOW!!!

According to the article Red Cross has allocated $20,000 per family to help in long-term recovery. This money is to be paid by Red Cross to providers of the services that help these families, not directly to the families. Seems the big beef is that these folks want the $20,000 in their own hands. What a crock.

How many of the "people" involved in the People's Relief Fund are the same "people" who are being pursued for hundreds of millions of dollars in welfare fraud? What is going on here besides a demand to "Gimme the money because I'm black?" Did I miss anything?

Here is Houston the Katrina "evacuees" have turned their FEMA checks and HUD checks into this:

Translation: Give us cash, rather than giving it to vendors, and give us everything now. Tell us how many white people you've already given money to, and you'd better have it all set up so that 9th ward former residents, no matter where they currently are, get the majority of the money, and they better be the right color of chocolate.

Any ideas on how I could become a professional lifetime Victim of Katrina so I would never have to work again? Seems like a lot of people have that gig.

I volunteered to work for the Red Cross for a day at the New Orleans Airport after Katrina. Every family with up to five members could receive $2,500 per car ( or $500 per person). It was facinating to see that every car in every line for hours had exactly five people. Like, I didn’t realize we had so many families in New Orleans with exactly five people. Maybe this is one for the records book, yeah that’s it! Believe me, if there is some way to get something free, they’re on it like flies to you-know-what!

Perhaps the Red Cross has noticed the trend of what happens to monies given to this crop of professional hurricane survivors.

I’m entitled to this money, also. Oh, I forgot! No I’m not. I just had trees on my house! I don’t live in New Orleans and I’m not black.

So using your example, we could creatively define families so as a unit of people could get the maximum dollars from Red Cross(I would think there would have to be two per family, maybe dad with one kid and mom with the other, each being a family - although in today’s world wouldn’t it be discriminatory to leave out families of one?)

You can be a family of one if you would like but you’re only getting $500 instead of $2,500!

Sorry, Bitsy, my joke was unclear! I was joking about the $20K per family, using what you have seen with the 2500 per carload. Scam it right, Daddy plus one, Mommy plus one, gramma plus one, etc. and a family that before this program lived together could manage to rake in $60K!
