Spanish intelligence has arrested a suspected double agent who had been sending state secrets to Russia, the head of the National Intelligence Agency (CNI) said on Tuesday, according to local radio.
The double agent had been working for Russia until 2004, CNI head Alberto Saiz said, according to Cadena Ser radio.
The suspected spy, who was arrested in Tenerife, the Canary Islands, on Monday, revealed dozens of identities as well as other information about Spain's spy service beginning in 2001, Saiz said, according to news agency Europa Press.
But no information about Spain's counter-terrorism fight was revealed, Saiz was quoted by the Europa Press as saying.
"National security has not been at risk," he said, adding that European Union and NATO security information had not been revealed either.
An eighth Spanish intelligence agent traveling with them survived. The eight spies, were in Iraq to provide intelligence for Spanish troops who were stationed at the time in Iraq as part of the U.S.-led coalition. The spies were traveling in two vehicles when insurgents launched an ambush with automatic weapons and rocket-propelled grenades. - LINK
They can’t help themselves. Russians love spying like Mexicans love tacos.
