House ban on Mexican trucks irks federal agency (Duncan Hunter)

WASHINGTON – U.S. transportation officials expressed disappointment after the House voted to block a program granting Mexican trucks temporary access to U.S. highways.

AdvertisementThe measure must pass the Senate and be signed into law by President Bush, who supports opening America's highways to Mexican trucks.

The ban was part of a $104 billion transportation spending bill approved by the House Tuesday. It would prohibit the Department of Transportation from spending any money on a one-year experiment in cross-border trucking, effectively shutting down the program.

The Senate is not expected to consider its own version of transportation spending legislation until September.

Rep. Duncan Hunter, R-Alpine, a key opponent of the Mexican-trucking plan, said the House ban would force transportation officials to “listen to the concerns of Congress and the American people.”

Hunter and other critics contend the administration has ignored safeguards for the program mandated by Congress.

The Transportation Department issued a statement after the vote saying it “serves merely to throw another roadblock in the path of a program that will lower consumer costs, help our economy and allow U.S. truckers to compete in Mexico for the first time ever.”

Mexican trucks have been banned from traveling freely throughout the United States since 1982.

Good. Just like the hacks at Homeland security had to stew in their juices after conservatives killed the Amnesty bill, let the DOT bureacrats cry in their beers.

Excellent! Way to go. Mexican trucks need to stay off of our roads unless their drivers are US licensed and the trucks pass US inspection.

What a load of crap. Every truck driver I know say that driving truck in mexico is asking to be robbed, killed, or both.

Claiming American truckers will compete in mexico is laughable at best unless you believe mexican companies are willing to pay many times the going rate to hire American drivers.

I forsee mexican roadblocks every five miles, fully staffed by federales and local policias demanding tribute from American drivers. It's the Mexican way.

Dont forget what this would do to American trucking freight rates if Mexicans compete for American trucking business. Look what they have done to the labor market already

If this program goes through and mexican truckers are allowed access to travel the entire country you can kiss American trucking jobs goodbye.

The same thing will happen to American truckers that has happened to American drywallers.

The Mexican trucking bill has been effectively defeated.

Good ping for the immigration list!

When did a bunch of two dollar bureaucrat start think they were the one running this country. If I were in congress whoever wrote that statement would be looking out his window from his new assignment post in Alaska.

It’s true. What trucker in his right mind would wish to risk his life much less his assets operating in Mexico? None that I know of. Hell! The Mexicans come over the border in the Otey Mesa area alone and steal the tires, lights etc. off the American owned equipment staged in the area. I know the same is happening in areas all along the Southern Border region.

My mother is a truck driver with Schneider national. When she has to work along the border she makes sure to get there in time to get locked inside the OC with security. (usually Laredo) She says that’s what all the experienced drivers do.

I'm with ya DOT.
Why can't trucks like these scoot along on our Highways? It's 'for the economy' dammit!

Sheesh, what a bunch of worry-warts.

I went looking for the very last picture and found these along the way. For those of you who know me, I love pictures. They add so much. Sorry for the long load but it may be worth it, as I have hitch hiked in Mexico and would never want their crappy trucks on our roads. They are bad enough already. Just my opinion.
