After Reid and the Dems tangled with the GOP last night, the Senate just passed a good border security funding amendment today, 89-1.
The goat who voted against it? Babbling George Voinovich.
The Corner has some back story. Yeah, Lindsay Grahamnesty was involved, but the movers and shakers were solid enforcement-first senators like John Cornyn.
Oh, and if Grahamnesty think this rectifies all his smearing of grass-roots conservatives as bigots, hes delusional.
Heres the roll (check out the fence-sitters, too):
The amendment summary, via BP:
There is hereby appropriated $3,000,000,000 to satisfy the requirements set out in section 1002(a) and, if any amount remains after satisfying such requirements, to achieve and maintain operational control over the international land and maritime borders of the United States, for employment eligibility verification improvements, for increased removal and detention of visa overstays, criminal aliens, aliens who have illegally reentered the United States, and for reimbursement of State and local section 287(g) expenses. These amounts are designated as an emergency requirement pursuant to section 204 of S. Con. Res. 21 (110th Congress).
More:
The amendment would provide emergency funding of $3 billion for:
· Hiring 500 more Customs & Border Protection (CBP) officers per year (FY08-12), 1200 more Immigration & Customs Enforcement (ICE) agents per year, 200 investigators to combat aliens smuggling, 50 Deputy U.S. Marshals;
· 23,000 Border Patrol agents hired, trained, and reporting for duty;
· 4 Unmanned Aerial Vehicles & 105 ground-based radar and camera towers;
· 300 miles of vehicle barriers & 700 miles of border fencing;
· A permanent end to the catch-and-release policy with 45,000 detention beds;
· Operational control over 100% of the U.S.-Mexico land border;
· To allow DHS to present a photo electronically to an employer so that the employer may confirm the identity of the individual when he presents ID;
· To require mandatory detention of aliens who overstay their visa by 60 days;
· To increase penalties for illegal entrants who are criminals of those who reentered after a deportation; and
· To reimburse local governments who choose to cooperation with ICE in enforcing the immigration laws (INA 287g).
287g is a focus of Deport Them Now.
If he does veto it, with the strong number of yea votes, this would be an excellent opportunity for both houses of Capitol Hill to override the President's veto, further revealing just how much "political capital" he's squandered.
I should hope such an end could be avoided by President Bush realizing what's happening - and that he endorses the bill, but based upon prior accounts and doubts of his cooperation, a veto override may ultimately be where we're headed and will only give Dem's the necessary ammo to finish completely paralyzing the Bush Administration.
If he is intent to veto a bill garnering as much support by lawmakers and the American public as this one, his veto would deserve nothing less than being overridden.
The measure was initially opposed by the White House, top Republicans said, and it clearly puts the president in a box. Bush had already promised a veto of the underlying homeland security bill for spending $2.3 billion more than he requested.
But the White House signaled it would at least accept the added money for the border.
“To the extent Congress supports additional emergency funding, we want to work with them to make sure it is spent on the highest border security priorities,” White House spokesman Scott Stanzel said.
Now, Bush’s GOP stalwarts in Congress such as Sen. Judd Gregg, R-N.H., are poised to override the president’s veto on the entire bill.
Problem with reading comprehension today? lol
The Employment Eligiblity Verification Program (EEV) is an Internet-based system operated by U.S. Citizenship and Immigration Services (USCIS) in partnership with the Social Security Administration (SSA). The EEV is currently free to employers and is available in all 50 states. The EEV provides an automated link to federal databases to help employers determine employment eligibility of new hires and the validity of their Social Security numbers.
I would have sworn that Malkin was a Japanese name.
Yoi ichinichi o. (:^D)
That is the Truth, if he vetos this bill, he may have just cut off his other leg and moves from “lame duck” to “crippled duck” status.
JWB’s ability to ignore We the People can be simply stunning at times.
He won’t veto a bill he knows has this much support. He may not be a Rhodes scholar but really isn’t stupid.
Oh man, roll out “Kevorkakitty” on Voinovich?
That is just cold man, ice cold....LOL
Are you kidding? Do you know how many hearts she’d be breaking if she were single?
Dead duck would be more like it.
See #44 for an explanation, it is a web-based program used by employers.
I’m not inclined to be very supportive of Bush right now...
But the way I remember it he threatened to VETO the Homeland bill because they loaded it with pork. And he did this because Republicans on the Hill wanted him to VETO high spending to get back some of their fiscal cred.
This was before this amendment. The VETO threat wasn’t issued, to my understanding, because of funding for border security.
That isn’t to state I believe he wants to enforce the law, just that VETO threat is not in proper context.
And, I can’t say I would be entirely surprised if those same Republicans that said they’d support a VETO and have since turned around and decided their cherished their pork too much, voted for this to make it more impossible to VETO the bill. Since they know Americans are still upset about the border.
She already broke mine, she is married with children AFAIK.
No problem ! I’m more prone these days to doing some of the same things. I blame on the first stages of alzheimer’s.
That was before Happy Harrys change of heart.
Reading that something actually passed I think I’m in the dementia stage.
I am intimately acquainted with basic pilot - some of it was developed by people that worked for me at a contractor. It won’t support this - trust me.
