ALLENTOWN, Pa. A federal judge has struck down the city of Hazleton's tough new law on illegal immigrants. U.S. District Judge James Munley has ruled unconstitutional the Illegal Immigration Relief Act -- a law that has been emulated by towns and cities around the nation.
Mayor Lou Barletta, the chief proponent of the crackdown, contends illegal immigrants have brought drugs, crime and gangs to the city of more than 30,000, overwhelming police, schools and hospitals.
The Republican mayor began pushing for the law last summer after two illegal immigrants were charged in a fatal shooting.
A nine-day trial on the constitutionality of the law was held in March. The decision handed down today will almost certainly be appealed by the city.

Appeal, appeal, and appeal all the way to the Supreme Court. This pissant judge (apology to FR’er pissant) is telling the people of Hazelton they have to let their city become a third-world hellhole. No way Jose!
This, my friends is prime example A of why we need Duncan Hunter as president.
I hope Lou Dobbs raises holy hell when he has Barletta as a guest on his show live at Hazleton (6 p.m. on CNN Eastern Time). Ditto Glenn Beck at 7 p.m. and 9 p.m. on Headline News.
Don’t give up Mayor Barletta and citizens of Hazleton! The “judge” is probably a charter member of the ACLU (Anarchist Communist Lawyers Union).
Well of course!
It's working AND the people like it.
It MUST be illegal! /s
Just beautiful.
I wholeheartedly agree. Take them to task.

Story blows-why was it struck down?
Another POS, liberal judge is legislating from the bench. I hope they take this on to the Supreme Court.
I really don’t think threatening federal judges is the way to go.
1) Violates Due Process
2) Prempted by Federal Law
The opinion is looooong!
Exactly.
Out of curiosity, do any Freepers here with more legal acumen than myself know what would happen if the town of Hazelton simply decided to ignore this judge's ruling, and enforce their own law anywise?
Thanks. Suspicions confirmed.
And 'they' say elections don't matter...
Without doubt.
