MOSCOW - Russian scientists hope to plunge to the seabed beneath the North Pole in the next few days in a miniature sub and plant a titanium capsule containing the Russian flag, symbolically claiming much of the Arctic Ocean floor for Moscow.Thick sea ice threatens to thwart the expedition, an engineer with Russia's premier polar research institute said Friday. But if the effort succeeds, it could mark the official start of a very cold diplomatic war for the Arctic, one of the Earth's last energy frontiers.
A convoy consisting of a research vessel and an icebreaker, and led by Russia's most famous polar explorer, set sail Tuesday from Murmansk toward the North Pole - shadowed, according to Russian TV reports, by at least one Norwegian military aircraft.

Paging Algore, Mr.Algore pick up on the house phone.........
Not to be cruel, but Russia doesn’t seem to have a very good track record when it comes to submarines. Remember the Kursk?
Not to worry. Green Peace will stop them.
They might as well claim it. We’ll never use it. Who wants all that nasty oil anyway? Lord knows we don’t need it.
So does this mean we get the moon?
Russia wants to claim the oil that is there now that the ice seems to be melting. They already have so much oil. They never stop. They can’t have the Arctic Circle; it is international.
America discovered the North Pole. Bush will probably give it to China or Mexicans.
That’s what I was thinking. Instead of a sub capable of planting tiny Russian flags, why don’t they invent a sub that can scoop radioactive remains of existing Russian subs lying on sea bottoms around the world?
I can see Canada getting into a twist over this.
Saturn is mine.
Most of their cold war subs are little more than scrap, now. Also, for years, the USSR would just dump nuclear cores in the Artic Ocean rather than dispose of them properly.
Wasn’t aware of that..interesting!
I didn’t know that. Was the Kursk a Cold War sub?
I get Uranus.
My girls laugh whenever we talk about it.
That's probably why they are shooting for the sea floor. They have lots of experience leaving things there...
In fact, I hear there are lots of Russian flags littering seabeds in most oceans...
No wonder the damn ice caps are melting! It's a communist plot!
Probably. They have built very few warships since 1990.
That reminds me of the crazy Irishman (Stephen's my name!), from "Braveheart".
You mean Ireland?
Yes, It's MY island!
According to Russian thought process we already own the moon.
Great flick.
