Here’s a bit more detail:

The 27-year-old shooter, Kenyada Yvonne Young, was arraigned Thursday on five charges: being a felon in possession of a firearm, carrying a concealed weapon, making a false report of a felony, delivery of a controlled substance (Vicodin, a powerful painkiller) and a felony firearm count. Visiting 60th District Judge Robert Benson set cash or surety bond at $300,000 and scheduled a preliminary examination for 9:30 a.m. Aug. 9.

Magett had been staying with a relative in the 2800 block of Leahy Street after getting out of prison two months ago, said Police Chief Clif Johnson. The state corrections department Web site shows Magett was released May 15 on parole after a 2001 drug conviction in Michigan’s Cass County and a 2003 prison escape conviction in Berrien County.

Magett was shot by his intended victim about 1:30 a.m. in the driveway at 2030 Riordan in what authorities have called a drug-related robbery attempt.

Johnson said Magett had been in prison most of his life and his record showed prior convictions for armed robbery and narcotics violations in Wisconsin and Michigan.

The shooter, too, has a criminal record.

Court records show Young had two felony convictions in 2000 for delivery of less than 50 grams of a controlled substance. She was sentenced Feb. 8, 2000, to two consecutive sentences of six months in jail.

Also arraigned Thursday was Magett’s alleged accomplice in the robbery attempt, 19-year-old Malcolm Lamont Price.

Price, of 3013 Woodcliffe, is charged with assault with intent to rob while armed and felony firearm possession. Benson set bond at $500,000 cash or surety and scheduled a preliminary examination for 9:30 a.m. Aug. 9.

According to court records, Price at the time of the alleged robbery attempt was a fugitive from a pending misdemeanor charge of first-offense domestic violence, for an alleged assault on a woman March 14. He was scheduled for trial July 20 in 60th District Court but failed to appear, and a bench warrant was issued for his arrest at that time.

Authorities said Young had just pulled into her driveway when Magett confronted her. She started to open the car door and he pulled it open the rest of the way, put a gun to her head and demanded money.

Police and prosecutors said the woman appeared to be cooperating but instead pulled a small-caliber handgun out of her pocket and shot Magett.

She then forced an alleged accomplice to drag Magett to her front porch and kick the residence open to make it appear a breaking and entering had occurred, police said.

Muskegon County Chief Assistant Prosecutor Brett Gardner earlier said the woman is an alleged drug dealer and that the holdup men believed she was carrying a large amount of money. She did have several hundred dollars in her possession, he said, and police also found what they said were illegally obtained Vicodin pills in her home.

Johnson said police used search warrants Wednesday at the woman’s home as well as at the residence where Magett was staying and at the home where Price lived with his mother.

The most current report says Magett has assumed room temperature.

Interesting story. It seems the victim had plenty of problems, but a credible self defense claim would have done a lot to mitigate them. She instead made them worse by tampering with the crime scene.

We have all heard that advise to drag the body into the house and bust the door (I even had a small town cop tell me that years ago), but only a complete idiot would think they could actually get away with it.
