Iraq needs to beat SA’s butt, in more ways than one.

It is over.. the Final Score... Iraq 1, Saudis 0

This is a monumental achievement for the Iraqis. Under Sadam, the national team players were tortured and killed for their losing performances. Against enormous odds, Iraq booked a its first ever championship (and interestingly, it was their first ever time to make it to the Asian Cup final).

The link below has highlights from Iraqs earlier matches. They played very well, and deserved their spot in the finals. Their young players are national heros. They stand to help unite the different factions throughout this war torn country.

They are delirious out there. We are in a hard building until it calms down some.

There were sirens, horns and an amazing amount of gunfire as the game ended.

Now, it's sporadic.

I'm so glad for the Iraqis. They really needed this.

Yeah, those victory celebrations in Detroit are so laid back and civil.

I don’t think you need to be a soccer fan as I am to understand how amazing an achievement.

I struggle to think of a US comparison - but suffice to say it would be just stunning.

A real David v Goliath

I’m not sure that I would want them to win, if I were Allegra.

I very badly wanted our Iraqi friends to win.

I'm happy for them. They needed this.

They're settling down now. We just got the "All Clear."

Well, she does. She does not consider the Iraqis she works with to be animals, nor do I.

1980 Olympic Hockey Team? That provided some spark for a country in the doldrums

I guess the US comparison would be the Ice Hockey finals against the Soviet Union in whatever Olympics that was way back when.

I think the closest would be when the US beat the Soviet Union for the gold medal in hockey in the 1980 olympics, but I think this Iraqi victory is even bigger.

I struggle to think of a US comparison

The Memphis Mudcats beating the Yankees.

Or, in the UK...

Watford beating Man United.......

oh..... wait.....

Yeah thats a good example.

I think when you look at the teams in this competition you see nations with very well established leagues - average crowd attendances of tens of thousands and an industry worth billions of dollars.

This is such great news, unifying news.
