1.5 MILLION NIGERIAN WOMEN COMMIT ABORTION ANNUALLY

Abuja (dpa) - An estimated 1.5 million Nigerian women commit abortion annually, the non-governmental organization Post Abortion Care Network (PAC), said in Kaduna, northwest Nigeria Sunday.

Dr Habibu Sadauki, the National Coordinator for the organization's northwest zone said that complicated cases of abortion claimed 220,000 lives in Africa's most populous country in 2006. Sadauki said that unsafe abortions were on the rise and were performed mostly by quacks, adding that it had accounted for 40 per cent of maternal deaths in the country.

He said the organization aimed to create awareness of the dangers of abortion.

``Cases of abortion have now become a social problem to almost every family in Nigeria and there is need for enlightenment on the issue,'' he said.

I have heard a report which states one reason for this: there is absolutely no social security net within Nigeria, save one. The presence of children, which appear after a sanctioned marriage. But, proof of fertility is hard to provide during the courtship process...

Fertility is the number one qualification to a sanctioned marriage, and large numbers of Nigerian men impregnate their potential brides-to-be on purpose, and in secret. Once the woman reports a successful pregnancy, both do what is necessary to abort to avoid the shame of a out-of-wed lock pregnancy. And then they get married, both confident that the biggest expectation from both families will be met.

Nigeria is not a place that has its act together as of yet.

Just curious but how does someone “commit” abortion? I thought you “have” one ... sorry about the nitpicking - it’s a boring Sunday ...

"We do not want word to get out that we want to exterminate the Negro population"

Who spoke these words? The Klu Klux Klan? Aryan Nations? The National Socialist (Nazi) Party? These are the words of Margaret Sanger, Founder of Planned Parenthood, the largest provider and promoter of legal abortion in the United States.

Abortion clinics were originally set up with the intention of slowing the population growth of Afro-Americans and others racial groups considered mentally or otherwise inferior.

“Commit” is used because abortion is illegal in Nigeria, except in cases where the mother’s life is in danger.

It’s a German press agency, with its B-team writing English headlines on a summer weekend.

But still you have to “have” one ... not “commit” one ... but then I read that a “B” team English major’s from Germany wrote the headline ....

So here’s the downside of “doing a test run” on fertility, then “cleaning up” the evidence afterward -

- the abortion itself is highly risky, undertaken in perhaps septic conditions, using crude instruments, with no follow-up medical attention. (You were expecting modern clinics for this procedure, maybe?)

- Mothers who have terminated their first pregnancy before term are less likely to conceive at a later date, and even when they do conceive, are more likely to miscarry (spontaneously abortion) any subsequent pregnancies.

- The husbands will still beat their wives unmercifully.

I ain't buying it. Somebody's dropped some decimals.

If 220,000 women died from mishandled abortions in a year, and that is 40% of the total maternal deaths, then about 550,000 women died having babies (or not).

According to this site, http://www.overpopulation.com/faq/maternal-mortality/maternal-mortality-rate-by-country-africa/, the maternal mortality rate for Nigeria is 1,000 per 100,000 or 1% of pregnancies.

For 550,000 women to die having babies, the country would have to have 55,000,000 pregnancies each year. With a population of 131M, that doesn't seem likely.

The actual number of births in Nigeria is 40 per 1000 population each year, which would total somewhere around 5.2M, which would make the total number of maternal deaths about 50,000.

It is likely that the article overstates maternal deaths by a factor of about 10. As I said, probably dropped a decimal.

If 550,000 mothers died each year, that would be a pretty significant percentage of the total of about 2.2M deaths in all.

The portion of the headline you refer to is grammatically correct since the object of the headline lacks an article and thus indicates a collective noun. The word 'commit' is also correct for a context like this where the activity is illegal or is representative of an evil, which abortion certainly is.

The rest of the women in Nigeria are beautiful white models who grew up in the U.S., failed to learn to speak good english, got trapped in Nigeria on a trip, and just need you to pay their hotel and travel bill so they can come marry you.

It was a German headline translated into English hence the lack of an article ...... plus the Germans have no word for “fluffy” and their operas last three days ..... and they end their sentences in a verb .....

Your irrelevant anti-German bigotry aside, the portion of the title in question is correct and your statement in post #3 "But still you have to 'have' one ... not 'commit' one" is simply incorrect for the reasons I outlined in post #14.

You certainly weren't worthy of any reply based upon what you wrote on this thread but the record needed to be corrected. Words matter, and leftist attempts at perverting our language to aid in their propaganda need to be countered no matter how obvious the lie currently may be. People don't just 'have' abortions, they are always an objective evil that people deliberately 'commit'.

*sigh* I was just trying to make light of a headline that was translated out of one language into ours. I spent three weeks in Tokyo and the standard statement there was: You know you’re in Japan too long when (then you fill in the blank) in that case it was “carrying a magic marker to correct the English on subway advertising posters.

Ok, so you can “commit” an abortion since in some places it is a crime. Happy?

I am not a left-winger, I am a Conservative and proud to say it, I don’t hide behind any false fronts .... I am not bigoted against any person, color, ethnicity, creed, country, religion - whatever. You don’t know me, you’ve obviously haven’t read my bio here .... so before going off on someone you don’t know anything about, chill.

Regards,
Jane
