RANFIELD, England, July 29 (UPI) -- Church bells in Cranfield, England, chimed every quarter hour for hundreds of years -- but the tradition was broken after some newcomers complained.

New residents said chimes kept them awake at night, Britain's Mail on Sunday reported. The city council has issued a noise abatement regulation, to take effect next month, preventing the bells from ringing at night.

The spokesman said the noise levels reached 50 decibels in a bedroom 140m (460ft) away.

Cranfield Parish Councillor Laurence Pollock said: "This results from a new development in the village.

"This development was started and some people moved in and argue they were not aware of this as a feature of village life."

Sort of like moving to the country and complaining about the smell of cowshit. Jerks.

Good point. It could be your garden variety idiot, or an idiot with an agenda.

Kind of like the people that build Mcmansions next to the sewage plant. Then they have the audacity to complain about “smells”.

Meanwhile, here in the good ol’ US, the residents of Hamtrack, MI are subjected to the caterwauling of the automated muezzin five times a day, calling the mohammedans to prayer. They got the church bells silenced, and then got their own ungodly harbinger of Hell installed.

I am intrigued by your comment.

Tonight is my night for being dumb apparently. What does Dell PC have have in common with church bells?

(Sounds like the set-up for a Johnny Carson zinger!)

“after some newcomers complained”

They must be drowning out the Muslim call to prayer.

Hey, it could be hogs. Or chickens. That might make them stop complaining about the cows.

I wonder if this is just a case of the UK media following
PM Brown's orders about "the religion that dare not be spoken of".

For all I know it could be just a bunch of average blokes that
moved to the country.

But I've learned to pay attention to vague descriptions of trouble-makers
in the press. Just too many times it turns out to be Islamic.
Just trying to be neighborly because they know their loudspeaker
"Call To Prayer" would clash with the bell-ringing.

It rings 4 times an hour, right? How could they not be aware?
I’ve heard of “buying on the spot” but in less than 15 minutes.....?

“”This development was started and some people moved in and argue they were not aware of this as a feature of village life.”

Lock them in stocks on the village square then, until they quit whining.

Ever stayed at a hotel in a southern city near railroad tracks? That segment in My Cousin Vinny has a lot of truth to it. Those things run all hours and blast that horn from hell at every crossing. These "newcomers" knew that Church rang the bell every 15 minutes. It is an agenda they are after. I'm sure the ECLU is all over it.
