Reports: Iran to buy jet from Russia

By YAAKOV KATZ AND HERB KEINON

Israel is looking into reports that Russia plans to sell 250 advanced long-range Sukhoi-30 fighter jets to Iran in an unprecedented billion-dollar deal.

According to reports, in addition to the fighter jets, Teheran also plans to purchase a number of aerial fuel tankers that are compatible with the Sukhoi and capable of extending its range by thousands of kilometers. Defense officials said the Sukhoi sale would grant Iran long-range offensive capabilities.

Government officials voiced concern over the reports. They said Russia could be trying to compete with the United States, which announced over the weekend a billion-dollar arms sale to Saudi Arabia and other Gulf states.

Despite Israeli and US opposition, Russia recently supplied Iran with advanced antiaircraft systems used to protect Teheran's nuclear installations. At the time, Moscow said it reserved the right to sell Iran weapons, such as the antiaircraft system, that were of a defensive nature.

The Sukhoi-30 is a two-seat multi-role fighter jet and bomber capable of operating at significant distances from home base and in poor weather conditions. The aircraft enjoys a wide range of combat capabilities and is used for air patrol, air defense, ground attacks, enemy air defense suppression and air-to-air combat.

After years of negotiations, the Indian Air Force in 1996 purchased 40 Sukhoi-30s and in 2000 acquired the license from the company to manufacture an additional 140 aircraft.

...excerpt from PalestineFacts.org

What led to the Six Day War in 1967?
...
Military Provocation By Arab Countries and Soviet Disinformation
...
At the same time, and unknown to the Israelis, the Soviet Union mounted a disinformation campaign pushing Egypt to join Syria against Israel. At that time, the Soviets were providing military and economic aid to both Syria and Egypt. On May 13, 1967 a Soviet parliamentary delegation visited Cairo and informed the Egyptian leaders that Israel had concentrated eleven to thirteen brigades along the Syrian border in preparation for an assault within a few days, with the intention of overthrowing the revolutionary Syrian Government. This was a complete fabrication designed by the Soviets to destabilize the Middle East. Similar false information may have been given to Egypt by the Soviets as early as May 2. The build up and aggressive intent were denied by Israel. UN Secretary General U Thant reported that UNTSO observers on the Syrian border:
... have verified the absence of troop concentrations and absence of noteworthy military movements on both sides of the [Syrian] line.

Nasser probably correctly interpreted the Soviet information as an indication to him that the time was ripe for an attack on Israel and that he had their backing. With the United States deeply distracted by the War in Vietnam, the Soviets had reason to think there would be no US intervention. Nassar then abandoned his former cautious policy and took the lead for new aggression against Israel. Syria and Iraq eagerly joined Egypt's preparations, increasing the momentum toward war.

These planes are no joke. If it’s the MKI version with thrust vectoring and other 4.5 generation features. I don’t know how the heck Iran could afford 250 of these when India only bought like 40 though. Something fishy here.

That would be the IL-78; sister aircraft to the IL-76. Great airplane. China bought some of each but the order's having a hard time getting completed and the price has gone up.

Need refuellers (air tankers)? Russia's got 'em!

Yeah, it could be a rumor, but Iran is also desperate to improve it’s air force, and Russia wants to protect it’s business interests in Iran. We’ll see. I just don’t know how they could afford that many.

Iran cannot get the MKI which has Israeli,Indian & French systems in it.India has purchased a total of 40 + 140+ 40 in atleast 3 different orders.

About the 250 aircraft for Iran-well it looks like BS for now.Not only would the price be over 10 billion USD,it would take atleast 8 to 10 years to complete the contract given the 2 Russian factories building these jets are busy.

The Iranians are very interested in the Chinese FC-1 & J-10 fighters. Those make much more sense for them, along with a smaller number of SU-30s.

Iran has business partners that we don't often see information about. ...and...oil, of course.

The thing has excellent range on internal fuel.Around 3000 kms in clean configuration. They could comfortably hit Israel & refuel on the way back.

I don’t think it’s about planes. It’s about getting cross ways with the US. Putin only has relevance by going against US. So He picks a tin horn dictatorship to back.

If past mid-east conflicts are any indication of Muslim prowess with aircraft 200 of these jets will be destroyed on the ground and the rest will flee over the border to Iraq.

If Past middle east conflicts in which Iran has participated in is any indication,it won’t necessarily be that easy.Refer to the 8 year war.
