Background Iraq in turmoil More (Adds speaker's statement in paragraph 2)

BAGHDAD, July 30 (Reuters) - Iraq's parliament adjourned for its summer recess on Monday, taking a break until September despite having failed to enact a series of laws demanded by Washington.

Parliamentary speaker Mahmoud Mashhadani said in a statement issued after Monday's session that he had dismissed lawmakers until Sept. 4.

"Parliament has decided to break until early September," Hussein Falluji of the mainly Sunni Accordance Front bloc in parliament told Reuters.

"We have already cut the holiday by one month. It is our constitutional right to take it."

The recess means parliament will resume just before U.S. military commander General David Petraeus and Ambassador Ryan Crocker are due to report back to Congress on the success of this year's "surge" in U.S. troops to Iraq.

Wouldn’t it be great if our lousy government took the next six months off? Next year they won’t be on the job for at least half the year because they are running for re-election...and we are stupid enough to vote for them.

Congress will also go on recess in August but you won't hear controversy about it in the MSM.

The legislative body has been useless, incompetent, do-nothing, and what little they do is dangerous to the health of the nation. Promises are left unkept while stupid political stunts consume all the attention, and there are deep divisions that the leaders are eager to make worse rather than fix ...

... BUT ENOUGH ABOUT THE DEMOCRATIC CONGRESS, let’s talk about Iraq ...

They are 18 months into a form of Government that we haven’t gotten right yet for over 230 years. Patience is needed.

Yeds, our nation would be better off if the Democratic Congress quit while it was ahead and closed up shop until 2009.

one of the wonderful things about Texas is their lege only meets for 6 months out of 2 years. Amazing.

The Federal Govt should take the lead and have a biennial budget and spend half as much time in washington.

Yes, that was funny. I agree on THAT aspect, that we have an incompetent Congress, BUT, like I wrote to Goldstategop, WHO is over here fighting AND dying trying to get OUR gov’t AND country established???! I was always for letting our guys and gals try to get it done over there, but when I heard THEIR gov’t is TAKING A VACATION, I just about lost it. NOW, I want them home, pronto! My God, the gall!

“We’re over there fighting for THEM,”

A lot more Iraqi soldiers and police got killed last months than US soldiers, fyi.

” ... and they have the gall to take off a MONTH, epspecially when they don’t even have their gov’t in place yet!”

wrong. They have had their democratically elected Iraqi government in place for 12 months now, with PM al-Maliki.

Also wrong is the weird view that just because their lege is not in session that the govt is taking off... of course our texas lege is out of session, and so is the US Congress, but that doesnt mean the soldiers and la enforcement and bureacrats are taking off.

Harry Reid will savage the Iraqi Parliament members for taking their vacation while he himself is going to be on one month vacation. He will savage them for not meeting the silly and fake benchmarks imposed by a body with no authority over them, the US Congress. While Harry Reid and the democrats Congress failed to pass anything in the last 6 months except for a silly minimum wage raise that only passed after the Republicans (fortunately) added tax relief to the bill for small business owners and after the bill was attached to the war funding bills that the democrats lost because they could not impose their surrender dates in the bill.

Harry Reid and the democrat Congress are the most impotent Congress in US history, they simply cannot win anything, fortunately :)

But if the President dares to go to the ranch in August, their is always a big uproar.

Nothing wrong with this picture. A few weeks vacation is not going to have any impact on their government existence.

This is what you get when you allow House RATS and Senate RATS unfettered travel to Iraq, to “talk” with people.

What’re we gonna do in retaliation? Invade?

Do we threaten to leave now if they don’t pass the bill.

And it’s not like the President or the Congress haven’t taken vacations while US troops are dying.

So, if they wanna take a vacation, let them.

On the plus side, it’s hard to call them a servile govt when they defy our diktat to pass the legislation we want.

Some might call it chutzpah. Or you could say they have us over a barrel.

“WHO is over here fighting AND dying trying to get OUR gov’t AND country established???! “

Our forefather did that. And right now, our soldiers are fighting in Iraq not just for the sake of Iraq but for OUR SAKE, to preserve the freedom and security we hold dear.

“but when I heard THEIR gov’t is TAKING A VACATION, I just about lost it. “

Score a victory for the biased drive-by lamestream media - you’ve been punk’d and sheepled by a report that if you think about it means nothing. No, the govt as a whole is NOT taking a vacation, just their legislature. Why cant Iraqi lege take a break, like every legislative body on earth? It’s 120 degrees over there and they dont have reliable electricity like we do. I have *NEVER* gotten upset over a legislative body taking a break - “No man is safe when Congress is in session”.

I don't think it's so weird - like I said, no one is over HERE giving their lives to get OUR govt established. They really aren't established yet. As long as our guys fighting still and dying, their govt has no business taking any time off! Rotate maybe, but NOT take off. We aren't taking any time off - what would happen if we did?

"A lot more Iraqi soldiers and police got killed last months than US soldiers, fyi."

Not to sound cold, but, that's good - as well they should. After all, it IS their country, not ours! They SHOULD be fighting and dying for THEIR country!

The liberals in the MSM hate Crawford, Texas. It’s hot, it’s not got big city amenities like NYC, and its Texas.

Good grief...perhaps you need a vacation as well. What's with all the shouting and excessive punctuation?

Let 'em have a freakin' break. They probably need it. Summertime here is pretty beastly and they probably need respite from the stress. We Americans here, military and civilian certainly take breaks from it and get out of the country to decompress.

The Ministries are all operating and not taking vacation. Just the Parliament.

“As long as our guys fighting still and dying, their govt has no business taking any time off!”

Can you PLEASE get OFF this particular lie?
The *GOVT* is not taking any time off! Only their legislature.

The legislature is just one part of the govt, and as we have pointed out ably, it often is of no consequence if it goes a way for a while.

Every single day, the Iraqi armed forces and other security forces are fighting and dying. The Govt is there, it is working, it is fighting. The Iraqi Govt is *not* taking any time off!

“We aren’t taking any time off - what would happen if we did?” - if you define “Govt taking time off” as “legislature not in session” then, yes, the US Govt *is* taking time off.

“A lot more Iraqi soldiers and police got killed last months than US soldiers, fyi.”
“Not to sound cold, but, that’s good - as well they should. After all, it IS their country, not ours! They SHOULD be fighting and dying for THEIR country!”

My point is that it is wrong to complain about them not doing something when they so clearly are doing so.
