Dick Morris: Hillary's comments on Obama backfire
Newsmax ^ | July 30, 2007 | Dick Morris

The polling is in, and Hillary made a big mistake in her sharp disagreement with Obama over whether the president should meet with leaders of rogue nations.

According to the Rasmussen Poll, Democrats agree with Obama over Hillary by 55 percent-22 percent. Without a poll to pretest her comments, Hillary instinctively took the "insider" position that the president should only meet with such leaders after extensive probing by subordinates to assure that the meetings would be productive. But she was wrong.

Democrats want the president to meet with leaders of such nations without preset conditions.

At the South Carolina Democratic presidential debate, Hillary and Obama clashed over Obama's statement that he would meet with leaders of rogue nations like North Korea, Cuba, Venezuela, and Iran if he were president. Hillary said that she would not do so and would not allow herself to be used for "propaganda purposes."

All week, Hillary pounded out her message, enlisting former Secretary of State Madeline Albright and her possible future secretary of state, Dick Holbrooke, to speak up on behalf of her position. She blasted Obama as "naïve," one of her few direct attacks on her opponent. For his party, Obama ridiculed her position as "Bush Cheney lite," a comment that got under Hillary's skin.

The exchange had little real significance during the two hour debate, but Hillary's obsession with the issue all week has given it real importance. She made a big mistake in the debate and amplified it all week.

Why? Perhaps Hillary is not using polling the way Bill always did — to pretest and post-test all important issues. If she had, she would not have locked into the minority position among Democratic primary voters and would not have stayed with that view all week.

Maybe her campaign staff was caught flatfooted for once.

The fact is that this week's debate was the first time the two Democrats have clashed seriously since the contest began early this year.

This round definitely goes to Obama.

Seems to me Maddie would agree with Obama.

Dick Morris is an opposite psychic. It’s amazing. Take whatever he says and the opposite is always true.

Actually on this Hillary was absolutely correct. It is the genocide-loving appeasers who call themselves Democrats who are wrong.

Dick Morris is doing his typical Hillary bashing without thinking. Dude, you hate her, we get it.

Hillary is running in the general election already. She is going for broke. She needs to be seen as the most conservative democratic candidate to pull up her high negatives. She is going to run to Obama’s right.

This was no mistake.

And Dick Holbrooke who once called Slobodan Milosevic “our partner for peace in the Balkans” during the Dayton Accords.

IIRC the dirtbag even polled where to go on vacation.

The man stood for nothing other than what was politically beneficial for him, a microcosm of the entire rat party.

Yes, tue, but that is now. Last April she stated the opposite. This was just her moving to the center. Her true thoughts are that these meetings should take place under no preconvied notions.

I agree with the poll, scoring on foreign policy issues means nothing to securing the Democratic nomination. Once, one of these two gets the nomination, it is a new ball game. Hillary’s instincts were right for the general election, not for the Hate America crowd that will determine the nominee of the Dem Party.

It sounds so good, doesn't it? Our leader will meet and talk with our enemies, understand them and in turn help them understand us. We'll bypass all that bureaucratic crap and get straight to the heart of our differences, and reach understanding and peace with all these "rogue nations".

How do you convince the uneducated and naive masses that this idealism has only led to greater conflict, has only made the world a more dangerous place? We need another communicator to explain why this hasn't worked in the past, and won't work in the future. Otherwise we'll find out for ourselves, and it won't be pleasant.

She could care less about the Rat Party right now, she knows she's a lock. This was about the general election.
