When would he realistically have to start running?

I think he could enter maybe a week or two before the first primary.

On the other hand, I don’t know who is running the Duncan Hunter campaign.... he’s the best candidate out there, he just needs to fly lean on the campaign cash until the first primary - and hope Thompson doesn’t jump in ———

Which makes him come off as a coward, IMO! Either get into it now or don't bother. That's my opinion.
