Court to halt data stream to Mexico

In response to public outcry, Orange County's Superior Court is halting the processing of traffic tickets in Nogales, Mexico.

Court officials on Monday amended the contract with the company that handles the tickets, Cal Coast Data Entry. Beginning Friday, Cal Coast will process all of the court's tickets at its Cerritos and Phoenix locations.

The brouhaha erupted last week, when KFI radio's fiery conservative "John & Ken Show" attacked the outsourcing and urged listeners to complain. Hundreds called and e-mailed the court and county supervisors.

Uecker said that critics had two primary concerns – security of the personal information once it crossed the border and the possible loss of jobs to Mexico. Uecker reiterated that the court felt comfortable with the security issue.

"Is (the change) because of the outcry? Yes," Uecker said. "We took this very seriously. We're concerned with the public's confidence."

The court has contracted with the Cerritos-based Cal Coast since March 2006. Information from tickets – including driver license numbers, car license numbers, birth dates and addresses – has been scanned at the Cerritos facility and sent electronically to the Nogales, Mexico branch location.

"(The change) certainly wasn't because we lacked confidence in the contractor," said Chelle Uecker, assistant chief executive officer of the Superior Court of Orange County. "For us, it's the public's confidence – that's paramount to us."

This is utterly incredible. Where do illegals get the stolen social security numbers they use with such impunity? Why from the California Court system! Where else?

Remarkable, just remarkable.
