Castro vows to fight for recovery

Fidel Castro portrays himself as still
being involved in affairs of state

The Cuban leader, Fidel Castro, has issued a statement saying he is fighting relentlessly for a full recovery from ill health. Mr Castro, 80, handed over power to his brother, Raul, when he underwent emergency stomach surgery one year ago.

Writing in Cuba's state newspaper, Granma, Mr Castro insisted that he is consulted on every government decision.

The article did not suggest when Mr Castro, who has not been seen in public for over a year, could return to power.

"Raul himself has been entrusted with making sure that every important decision, during the period that I have been recovering, was decided after consulting with me," he wrote.

"What am I going to do? I will fight ceaselessly as I have done all my life," he said.

For the first time in 48 years, Mr Castro did not put in an appearance at the country's National Rebellion Day celebrations last week.

Secrecy surrounding his condition has fuelled to rumours about the extent of his health problems and his eventual political future.

However, Cuban officials have repeatedly said he will eventually resume office

Sounds like El Commandante will be spending more time in Spain now that he’s decided that he’s going to get better.Under Cuba’s world class health care system, one must wonder how many Cubans...other than El Commandante.... are sent to Europe when local treatment isn’t doing the trick.

"My Fellow Cubans! It is very important that we all pull together for the glorious communist state, so I know you will understand me when I say that the entire medial budget for the nation is going to be earmarked for me as I cling valliantly to life. Just keep remembering on how much you love me, and I am sure we can all get through these unpleasant times together. Well, except for you second-and third class citizens that hardly get any medical care now. You are going to die."
