Copperheads are not uncommon, especially out here in eastern Kansas. Rattlers are everywhere.
Red on yellow, deadly fellow. Red on black, friendly jack.
When Hillary said "I Do" to Bill?
We killed a 49” copperhead at the edge of our lawn 3 weeks ago. The Audubon book said that the record was 51”.
“He just took a hoe and killed the snake.”
Uh oh, you can now chalk up any future career with MSNBC. I think you just offended a bunch of folks that will never read your comment.
I think originally they came from Africa; all the ones I’ve known were bred here. most colubrids are native to USA.
Ball pythons like their cages warm and fairly humid.
Like pheasants came from Korea originally.
“My 6 foot shovel was worthless if he could strike me from 15 to 20 feet.”
A copperhead striking 15-20 feet? That’s science fiction. I’ve never seen one strike farther than 1/2 his body length and I’ve killed a few.
It’s my opinion they’re the most sluggish of the North American pit vipers, behind Moccasins and Rattlers.
What! Is this guy nuts?
I am an animal lover and a vegetarian! And I hate cruelty--to humans or animals--as much as anybody does!
But I would have killed the damn thing myself--on the spot!
And anybody who lets something like this loose should be locked up permanently--and never let out!
I was going by what I found in references on the internet. If you trust a copperhead to only strike 18 to 24 inches, be my guest.
You know how suddenly the light flashes on after you’ve left the room? As soon as I posted I felt a need to remove Mary Matalin and James Carville from the rhetorical theme of the query.
Bill is to Hill as jam is to jelly; they don’t slither as much as they ooze.
Work out the mechanics of the equation; for any creature, a forward motion from rest is rarely greater than half the body length per pending limb in any direction other than straight down.
Try jumping on one foot.
I don’t trust Copperheads to do anything, I’ll kill them on sight unless it’s an outlying, non populated area. The 15-20 feet striking distance is flat wrong.
You are probably more knowledgeable than I am, it could have even said “.5 Times” its length. All I know is it was 42” long and was huge in diameter, probably from eating a lot of wildlife. I hadn’t seen a lizard, frog or rabbit in weeks.
I do not like snakes and it doesn’t matter whether they are venomous or not. My dislike must be a genetic link to Eve.
Some how I sent that last post before I was finished typing.
I am not too thrilled with the idea of going in my basement now and I won’t be visiting your garage either. lol
I read where they nest in the same place for years sometimes.
I find myself looking under the car every time I go out now. LOL!
