Dear Friends and Colleagues,
I have exciting news! As many of you are aware, I have spent the last few months working on a one hour documentary about the November 2004 Battle for Falluja. The program, The Anvil of God, is scheduled to air this Friday (8/3) at 10pm eastern.
This is the third hour that I have produced with correspondent Tom Foreman. (Ambush at the River of Secrets and The Lion in the Village) Our hope in creating Anvil is for viewers to pause and consider the sacrifices made every day by the men and women serving overseas and their families back home.
The Anvil of God tells the story of Camp Lejeunes 1/8 Bravo Company. Bravo went into Falluja believing the battle would last 96 hours. It lasted five weeks. As they walked the entire city the Marines fought heated battles, searched house to house and faced their mortality on a daily basis. The Marines of Bravo were the tip of the spear as Americans progressed through the Falluja and they suffered numerous casualties as a result.
I appreciate all of the interest many of you have expressed in this project and hope that you will be able to tune in!
Spread the word!

just curious as to when they are finally going to air this special. my husbands brother was one of the 1/8 marines that was shot and killed. we are interested in taping this special when it finally airs. could you please let us know when it will be airing.
I will do my best. I just got back online after a two-day power outage due to severe thunderstorms here in VA. Don’t quite know why they didn’t show it, or did they?
nope they didn’t air it, the mine thing was on. so hoping that it will finally be on this week, but more than likely it will be all about dean.

just curious if they finally aired the show. if they did i missed it. if they aired it, are they going to be showing it again anytime soon. keep me posted. thanks
Looks like the CNN special will air tonight, Friday, August 31 at 10 p.m. eastern time.
ARRRRGHHHHH! I’m going to miss it.
I’m 40 miles from home and just getting ready to go.
Thanks!
Bump!
Pa it was great.
You catch the second showing at 11:00? I thought it was well done. I especially liked it when they reinforced the fact that there weren’t a lot of civilian casualties. And taking fire from the mosque (loved seeing that minaret come down). And how about recognizing the dead terrorist from earlier in the day - the guys with the white flags?
I have a few video clips of the battle taken by a 3/1 Marine before he was killed on 11/17. Maybe one day I can share those with you.
I broke several different speed limits riding home to watch it.
It was as fair and balanced as anything I have seen on CNN(short of Glenn Beck).
And it was respectful of our dead Marines without being political. I felt at least that their lives and deaths were examined gently and honorably. It was refreshing to see that sort of coverage and just as refreshing was the conclusions that it left us with, that these Marines had achieved the sort of greatness one finds in accomplishment and sacrifice.
The 1/8 is a proud unit that has a special place in the Corps, like the Fifth and Sixth Marines only without the Fourragere.
dont feel bad, we missed it too... i wonder if they will be doing a reairing of it anytime soon... i certainly hope so, that way we can see it too....
I thought it was pretty good, though too short. There’s just no way to put all that into an hour, less commercials. I would say that it was remarkably balanced.
I’m still polling the folks I know with the 1/8 to see their opinions. I just talked with a buddy who lost her scout-sniper son who was assigned to the 1/8 a couple of months before that battle. He and “Ski” were together when it happened. We’re all a pretty close-knit family, if you hadn’t noticed.
Anyway, looking forward to the next GOE.
