Just turned on the news. 35W bridge collapsed in the Mississippi River. Cars, trucks, semis.....

Fires burning, tanker trucks, at least one school bus, more than ten cars......

Just now breaking.......

Channel 5 says that a 2006 DOT report says that there was cracking in the steel beams holding up the bridge.

From what I can tell from the pics it’s old enough to have been put together with rivets,,,my guess is the iron was being replaced and put back together with bolts,,,
I’m gunna bet “Non-union” Iron workers,,,there was a thread about this awhile back,,,

I guess you missed the Mianus River bridge collapse on I-95 in Connecticut some years ago, and the Schoharie Creek bridge up on the New York State Thruway a few years later.

At this point, it could be an engineering failure or it could be terrorism, or maybe something else. It's way to early to rule out any causes.

Sounds like May 2006 there was an inspection showing cracking in the structure. Fire burning again.

I agree about terrorism. People on the bridge reported hearing jackhammer-like sounds before the collapse. Multiple explosions of charges under the supports? Even earthquakes don’t cause this much damage all at once.
