You folks need to come to western Kentucky and Indiana and take a look at our main bridges going over the Ohio river. They are ancient, and are being painted right now, but they are old, have been there forever, have been subjected to countless floods, and are of different design. They are on US 41, and I am amazed that none of the earmarks and pork have found their way here to replace them. It will take a major disaster like the one in Minnesota to get some attention.

“fails in one inspection area—excessive rust on 1 bolt”.

Depending on the bridge, this could be very, very imporant. As you may recall, the Silver Bridge collapse in Point Pleasant, West Virginia, was caused by the failure of a single eyebar.

Can you imagine NY’s bridges falling down and the two tunnels? At what age will these crumble? Those structures are VERY OLD.

Oh for goodness sake, 40 years is not OLD. MOST bridges in this country are that old or older, and they are fine for their intended use. Just think of Europe, where many of their most famous bridges (ie Pont Neuf in Paris, Charles Bridge in Prague) are CENTURIES old.

I think they will find a combination of factors came together to bring this bridge down. Maintenance is important, but even so, remember this bridge WAS undergoing repair when this happened. It had been inspected on schedule and not found to be in danger. What do you think is humanly possible in this kind of situation? Why must someone always be blamed?

We are ‘conservatives’ - do we really want Fed Gov’t to increase their intrusion into our lives? Do you really think we can totally eliminate risk altogether? Do you really want to be taxed enough to build all new bridges in your city/state every few years? Nuts!

I just finished watching the cbs evening news.

Before I go any further, I must explain that I get thee channels. I watch this crap just like FReepers lurk the DU...I like to see what's coming.

katie was especially repugnant slug tonight...she finished up with a short diatribe which described the horrible conditions of our crumbling infrastructure...placing the blame on all levels of our gumbint (but we kind of know who she's referring to.)

Incredibly, she must have received a thorough education on the entire infrastructure of the entire United States in less than 24 hours...but hey, Keanu Reeves learned Kung Fu in 8 hours...in a movie.

Well, exactly who is going to fix it katie?

Is this more important than the billions and billions you libs spend on your socialist programs and entitlements?

Let's redirect all of that, and just do it "for the bridges".

That’s about right. The electric grid infrastructure is also needing about $50 billion in upgrade and maintenance. the entire car/truck fleet is also obsolete and needs replacement. NYC is obsolete and needs replacement. Probably Chicago, too. New Orleans is being renovated now. This stuff adds up.

Well, in Texas a big chunk goes to pay for the public schools.

Would you post a link?

I live in Texas and am very concerned about this.

Are you an expert on bridges?

What do you base your opinion on?

As far as I am concerned, I EXPECT the Federal and state to maintain roads and bridges with tax dollars they ARE getting for THIS.

You should read "The Coup" series. Starts October, 2006.

Followed by the "Under Seige" series.

Interesting Reading
