China pulls the plug on Harry Potter translation

Government censors are believed to have moved in to stop Chinese teenagers compiling their own translation of the seventh and final Harry Potter novel in advance of the official Mandarin edition's publication.

A fan website, known in Chinese as the International Wizards' Alliance, had posted five chapters of Harry Potter and the Deathly Hallows - Deathly Disciples in Mandarin - within a few days of the English edition appearing.

But following protests by The People's Literature Publishing House, the state-run firm that owns the mainland rights to the book, a notice has appeared on the website saying that its team of young enthusiasts had been disbanded.

"The translation team is hereby dismissed with immediate effect," it said. "All translation activities have been stopped due to various reasons." The "various reasons" formula almost invariably refers to just one: a call from the authorities.

The really interesting question is: will the official translation shy away from subjects in the book that might be uncomfortable for the Communist Party?

First they have to figure out what it all means. Then they have to provide a suitable interpretation so the little children they want to turn into good little commies grow up to hate liberty.
