In my opinion, "Keeping it real" means emphasizing our animal needs and just going with whatever your emotions tell you to do. It's the opposite of being civilized. Civilization is an artificial construct which moves humans away from a purely savage existence. If you "keep it real", you embrace the savagery.
That sounds about right.
What do you mean by "artificial construct"? Man is a social being, by nature. 99.9% of the world lives within some kind of society or civilization. True anarchy and savagery is aberrant and transient.
But not all civilizations are created equal. Some are better than others.
