Intel, the computer chip maker, has been forced to apologise for an advertisement which has been widely criticised as racist.
The ad, which was for a new generation of micro-processors, showed six black sprinters crouched in the start position in front a white man wearing a shirt and chinos in an office.
Above the image was a slogan which read: "Multiply computer performance and maximise the power of your employees."

Who thought THIS was a good idea?
Bill O’Reilly?
That ad’s so awful, so DUMB, and so ignorant of reality that it’s GOT to be an Onion gag.
Hahahahhahaha. Is this real?!
I get the concept of “turn your office desktops in to sprinters”.
I also get the idea of runners in the starting blocks, ready to sprint.
But, if the guy in the center were Chinese, what would have been said? Is it the six black runners, or the single white guy, that has everyone sentitive?
At least the white guy isn’t carrying a mint julip. That would have really been poor judgement.
What AD company? They just lost an account.
I want reparations.
Where’s the racism?
Everybody knows the white guy is the fastest. This is so mis-leading.
Wheres the racism?
In the minds of the racists. Though maybe they should have used a middle-aged pot-bellied black executive as the center point, to avoid a Sharpton/Jackson moment...
Looks to me the ad is saying white guys can’t run, and they don’t have maximum performance. How insensitive! ;-)
I guess it’s racist because it’s a white guy that has 6 black employees he’s trying to get to perform better?
If it was a black guy in the office and 6 white guys, it would be ok.
“Everybody knows the white guy is the fastest. This is so mis-leading.”
Obviously. This is only racist to people that haven’t been paying attention. Show me the American Olympic Sprint team. I guarantee you will not find a non-black face in the bunch.
The ad is dumb, not racist.
I really think anyone finding racism here is probably looking way to hard.
“Looks to me the ad is saying white guys cant run, and they dont have maximum performance. How insensitive! ;-)”
As a white-Swede-Jew-Irish-American, I’m officially offended. Where’s my reparations?
I’m guessing it is considered racist because the white guy is “the boss” over the blacks. He’s standing there looking smug and self-satisfied, with his arms folded in front of him in an authoritative manner, while the blacks could be construed as “bowing down” subserviently before him.
I don’t think all of that would have registered with me if I had just seen this while idly flipping through a magazine, though. I might have thought, “weird ad,” but that’s about it.
“Who thought THIS was a good idea?”
Someone who is so free of racism that it never even occurred to him that it would be maliciously misinterpreted.
I agree. Probably what happened is that the agency sent a call out for six sprinters to the local colleges and these are the guys who showed up.
If there had been a white guy in the group the agency sent over, I have no doubt they would have used the guy with no more or less thought than was put into doing the shot with the all black group of guys they had.
That’s NOT racism. It the opposite. It’s color blindness.
It’s people who see every single thing through a peculiar prism that puts skin color at the center of everything that are the real racists.
